Hey Bonnie thanks for the welcome!! I will be giving your recommendations a listen for sure, my partner is proggier than me and would appreciate all the help he can get!

Thijs van Leer is a total dude - I really like Focus! Hope you get to see them live. I haven't heard too much of the Gathering but what I've heard I like, and Anneke's voice certainly sounds great on Devin's latest album!

I've never really cared much for pinning down what rock is prog and what isn't. I just enjoy Johnny jamming like there's no tomorrow here on the festival of festivals.

Most welcome!
Well just have a look around over here on this thread for All Things Prog...
and if that doesn't help you and your pard out entirely, be sure to check out ProgArchives.com - you might well meet me over there as poster/prog reviewer 'Antennas'.

Another absolutely awesome site on Anything Prog is dprp.net - Dutch Progressive Rock Pages - it posts of about anything happening in the realm of prog/gothic/classic/hard rock.

YEAH!!!
Thijs is a true legend. I hope I'll be able to see him and his Focus perform live at Hedon, Zwolle, NL, coming October. But my agenda is pretty crowded at around that time - some 6 concerts in 7 days ... so ... keeping my fingers crossed, yes.

You know Devin's awesome Addicted???
Yep, Anneke surely makes a mark on that fantastic album indeed. I was pretty sad to have missed their combined concert about a month ago.
At least I'll be able to see Anneke performing with her own band Agua de Annique pretty soon in my hometown. Check out her work with The Gathering as well... it's just great.
Best singer ever from my country.

Johnny Winter is a LEGEND indeed. Blues, blues, blues!!!
As for the whole discussion on 'what's prog and what's not' -
Discussions about that subject get pretty heated on prog forums, and 'never the twain shall meet' as you'll understand. Asking for a settlement about that is about as near as asking for a settlement between Nadal and Federer fans, oops, I mean tards...

It might not be much of a surprise to find out that I myself belong to the 'anything goes'-part of progrock fandom, including classic prog, heavy metal, as well as black/death metal, free-jazz, experimental, 'space', and post rock.

As long as it ain't overly-steered-towards-commercialism, easy, boring rubbish (I personally draw the line on anything Gangsta-Rap-related ), I'm open to it all. Good thing that ProgArchives.com seem to agree with me on that matter.

Thanks again for your contributions, dear folks!

Well, after all this talk about contemporary prog-related stuff...

Here's the REAL DEAL:

Fantastic, from their Yessongs recording. It would never get any better than this. What a band, what a performance!

Cherished forever... 'in sweet accustomed ways...' - this is what genuine PROG ROCK is all about, folks!!!

Hello again - I'm working my way through some of the videos, love that Gathering song!

My partner reads ProgArchives a lot - I'll check out the other site you recommended and tell him about it as well!

We have 'Addicted' on in the car at the moment! It's a fun album - full of energy and it really sticks in your head.

Gangsta-rap prog!! That made me giggle. I have seen some of the arguments on ProgArchives and know that prog fans are reknowned for being very picky about their genre! I also am an 'anything goes' sort of girl, I am not overly bothered about pigeon-holing bands for any purpose other than to give others a good idea of what a band is like. Although I appreciate prog tendencies in any band I do also like good old-fashioned metal and rock.

I'm off to check out some more video recommendations!

EDIT: Yes are fab!! I listen to a couple of their albums quite a lot at home. Close to the Edge and one other, I can't think off the top of my head... Anyway, great stuff.

Hey everyone Hope your having a good week!

No contributions from me today. Sure you can understand Karin but im stuck listening to Were Here Because Were Here on a daily basis at the moment, as well as a healthy dose of the back catalogue again. Always happens when a fave band releases an album i become obsessed again for a period before my next craze :P

To ktdude. If you haven't already heard it then give this album a go ( Anathema - Were Here Because Were Here). It's blowing my mind at the moment.

You should really check out their stuff. All of their albums are great, my personal favourites being Mandylion (their debut, also their heaviest effort) and How To Measure A Planet (more trip-hop like, reminding of Portishead at times).

Yep, me too ! There are some subgenres within progrock that I really can't get into - mostly Zeuhl/RIO, which only makes me shake my head and wonder WTF these guys are doing, LOL. But anything else, from proggy metal to folky stuff, it's "yep, come-to-mommy..."

My first ever Prog Love, I well remember how I felt when I discovered them as a wee teen - "OMG, is music like *that* even possible...?" - and you never forget your first loves, no?

CTTE, Fragile, Relayer & Going For The One are all classic masterpieces within the genre... and beyond.

Tell me all about it. I'm pretty much with it as well. I have quite a stack of discs next to me which I should be doing some reviewing work for, but alas - every ten minutes or so, I find myself listening to a track from WHBWH again . Album-of-the-Year, no doubts about that whatsoever!

Hey, look what I found for you!

A taping from their gig at the Burgerweeshuis, Deventer, NL, in April this year - a gig that I unfortunately had to miss out on as I was climbing Machu Piccu, Peru, at that very moment. Talking about 'bad timing'!

And... a very charming little interview with the very charming Vinnie Cavanagh. What a DOLL he (still) is.

Interviewer: "How would you describe your music?"
Vinnie: "I don't know... I think it's multi-dimensional, multi-facetted. We have no limits, no barriers for what we want to do... "

And of course, some very kind words for the venue, Vinnie stating that it's Dutch, so very well organized, very professional, 'even backstage'. Yep, you can clearly see that, by the gazillions of crates of Grolsch-beer stacked behind him!

It's going very fast for Anathema right now. WHBWH is on the second spot of ProgArchives's most highly rated albums of 2010 right now, there are threads about the band appearing over there very regularly now (I contributed to this one, but didn't start it myself, eh...), and quite few of their upcoming gigs are already *sold out*. It might well be that the upcoming shows will be the last in the club circuit - next stop, Enormodomes (just like PT, for that matter)!
I have mixed feelings about that, of course I am very happy for them as they so genuinely DESERVE it, after 20 years of struggling, but at the same time, I feel the happy days when Danny would sent me off to get him a pizza at 3:00 AM* might well be over, soon...

*and I managed to do so. LOL.

Da Master Steven Wilson & his so much appreciated accomplice, i.e. Mr. John Wesley, performing the lovely song Lazarus acousticly somewhere in Boston.

So rest your head upon me, I have strength to carry you...!"

Hey! Still completely buzzed with yesterday's concert, but it was awesome... Meshuggah are indeed in a different league... Too bad the set was kinda short, but you can't expect them to play for two hours in a festival... Even though, it was out-of-this-world while it lasted!

I wished I could appreciate My Dying Bride's performance a little bit better (because they deserved it), but I couldn't help but wish them to get out of that stage ASAP...

All in all, it was fantastic, I never thought I would ever bang my head the way I did yesterday!

And because, as you've said, the discussion about what's prog and what's not is indeed laughable, there you go (obviously not from yesterday's performance, because the videos me and my brother made aren't anything special, but I'll try to post them later):

Awesome band. I too seen these guys at a festival early on in the year and agree they are amazing. Sadly they had technical problems during there final check so a short set got even shorter. Hope to see them again in the near future.

Hey Fabio, good to hear you had such a great time!
Meshuggah... well, the inventors of the dreaded (LOL!) style of Math Metal. I admit it - a bit too much for me, at a certain point during a gig (I've seen quite a few myself as well at festivals), my head starts to hurt at the counting of all of the time signature-changes. But most certainly a great band, and one to watch... with that amount of freakishness, you'd expect them to move into prog even more with age, ŕ la Mr. Townsend with his Strapping Young Lad.

I wished I could appreciate My Dying Bride's performance a little bit better (because they deserved it), but I couldn't help but wish them to get out of that stage ASAP...
- I'm a sucker for their 'doomy romance' myself, but I can understand that others, especially the fans of more uptempo heavy stuff, would describe them as 'boring'. Not to forget that I have a huge soft-spot for Mr. Aaron Stainthorpe, perhaps one of the kindest guys in the entire scene.

All in all, it was fantastic, I never thought I would ever bang my head the way I did yesterday!
That must have been quite a sight, hope you didn't damage your brains too much, . It's a great feeling indeed, apart from the next morning creeping out of your tent with a stiff neck, as described so well in Metallica's Whiplash.

And because, as you've said, the discussion about what's prog and what's not is indeed laughable, there you go (obviously not from yesterday's performance, because the videos me and my brother made aren't anything special, but I'll try to post them later):
Awesome vid indeed. Would like to see yours as well!

Yeah, I am very happy that I got to know them when still 'nobody' knew them all too well. They were very approacheable for the fans, always time for a chat, and don't be surprised if you'd even get invited to their spot on the campsite for a beer and an impromptu past-midnight acoustic concert!

People who don't know them always think of them as being very heavy-minded, but aside from their music, they know how to crack a joke and have fun.

Well no concerts for me this month, but o_O upcoming September... everyone, including their dogs, cats, and goldfish, will be touring the Low Lands again!
