Default What will Nole’s upcoming marriage mean for the future of his career?

“Throughout the Open Era, only Andre Agassi managed to win more than 3 Grand Slams after he was married. (He won five, but then he was married, divorced and married again, later.) I looked at nine past champions: Agassi, Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, Federer, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Mats Wilander. They accounted 19 grand slam titles as married men – an average of just 2.1 per player.
McEnroe was the only one among them who never won a major once he was married, and 3 of those men won 3 (Connors, Federer and Wilander).

Djokovic, who turns 27 in May, recently hinted that he and Jelena will wed soon. Roger Federer was also 27 when he married, but going forward he won just 3 majors (2 of them within nine months of the event).” – PETER BODO for tennis.com

"Novak Djokovic has hinted that his wedding to fiancée and long-term girlfriend Jelena Ristic is not too far away.

The Serb proposed to Ristic in September, shortly after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal in the US Open final. He did not lose another match until the Australian Open quarter-finals, when he was stunned in five sets by eventual champion Stanislas Wawrinka.

Appearing on a Serbian talk show alongside Ristic, who manages the Novak Djokovic Foundation, Djokovic said - Jelena, enjoy it while you can. In a couple of months you will be changing your last name to Djokovic." - Atpworldtour.com

That quote is from the 5th of February, so presumably an April/May wedding.

I seriously cringed. I'm happy for these two, but...eh, guess I'm not the biggest fan of the patriarchal traditions of the institution of marriage.

Looks like it.

Between MC and Madrid looks like a nice gap in his schedule.

As much as I like to see cute birdies in love, there is no question marriage is a regressive institution.... especially for women. Sure, you look at how they get money when they get divorce but marriage is a disgusting institution, outdated and takes power away from both men and women. As far as Nole goes, he is in trouble. Not just marriage. His lapses are not going away. He is losing to people he used to beat and also losing against the other top 3. This year is becoming a nightmare for him unless he wins something quick.

Why do you cringe at a couple choosing to observe the patriarchal traditions of marriage? There is nothing wrong with a woman taking a man's second name, just as there is nothing wrong with a man taking a woman's second name. It is entirely their choice.

Would have been fun to see Novak Ristic in RG.

If you love your girl... truly do, you don't marry her. I am sorry. Marriage is and will always be a regressive institution. Even feminists agree with me on this. Facts are very clear ... It's not just a man or woman taking the other person's name... you bind yourself to one person for your whole life ... which is fine but you don't need to get married to love someone for your whole life. tell me... what is the purpose of marriage? Why should people who are in love get married? But Nole is entitled to his choice. He just won't be winning a whole lot after getting married. The stats are there

He rebels with glee. Probably he spent too much time with money grabbers and starry eyed coaches and needed to feel success excitement without sleeping much. Obsolete, commercialistic wedding traditions spell disaster.
