The article in L'Equipe today:
Quote:
Monfils assure

Here's a summary, there are some really funny parts in French! And Rasheed is commenting on his game for the first time, he sounds like he wants to change it a lot.

All happy at the Olympics, easy against Cuevas: Gaël is looking good.
After a couple of basic questions about his (solid) match, a journalist came to the really important stuff. "So, Gaël, you're trying to compete with Arnaud Clément in the people magazines?" Big smile of Gaël: "What are you talking about... - People are talking about a certain swimmer... [Laure Manaudou, in case you've missed the whole buzz, she's huge in France and it is a big deal there.] - No, there's nothing. - But why this rumour then? - Because we're getting along, because people saw us together and things are going very fast then! But I have a gf [the journalist adds it's not Margot anymore ] and you will see her very soon. I had some stress at home, btw, because my gf also reads these magazines..."
From the Olympics, where he only managed to attend a bit of the match of the French handball girls against Norway, he will most of all remember a lot of fun: "It was like the INSEP, but to the power of 10. And since I spent 3 years at the INSEP, I knew quite a lot of people there and got on well with the others too. I already knew some swimmers, boys and girls (big wink ), athletes, judokas. I even met Grégory Baugé again, a racing cyclist who was in my class when I took the BEP Electronics" [BEP is a technical school certificate]. BEP Electronics? Even the biggest Monfils connoisseurs didn't know about that part of his life. "Yes, I have the BEP! It wasn't easy because I was skipping school a lot, but I passed the exam". The journalist points out it definitely was a very informative post-match interview.
He didn't waste too much energy in Beijing, was looking good against Cuevas (who is famouse for having lost to Harrison this year). Then the same comments about his match as in the audio interview (good, but he could have done better, etc.).
Rasheed: "He needs to find his rhythm. He's still a bit erratic when he needs to be aggressive. He's always played the same way his whole life. The process is just beginning."
Gaël says Rasheed is "tough" and is an early riser, so he likes very early training sessions (poor Gaël!)
And the last sentence is about his shoes, it's written "An nou ale misie" on them. It's creole and means something like "Come on, man!"

Gael wins... but he scared me a bit when he dropped the 3rd set. Glad he got the win, Korolev can be dangerous if his shots are going in. Now on to Daveed.... envious of anyone who has tickets, this could be a classic.

Pissed that we didn't get to see any of the match in the US, but the Coin upset made up for it!

His audio interview:
http://www.fft.fr/usopen/2008/?id=4017
A good match, but he had a big lapse in concentration in the 3rd set. He wanted to make him play a lot, but he really was too defensive after a while, was "lulled into sleep" by his own tactics, so he's not really happy with his performance again, he wasn't able to play 3 full sets.
The journalist: you've reached your goal, you're going to play Nalbandian in the 3rd round. So Gaël answers of course that the 3rd round is not his goal!
Then the journalist, who really gets it all wrong, means Nalbandian obviously has a game which suits him well. Gaël answers it's a style of game which gives him quite a lot of troubles, on the contrary, even though he was able to find a solution in Beijing.

He's feeling well, but he thinks he still has a lot of shortcomings tenniswise. He hadn't a very good feeling against Korolev, during the warm-up with Rasheed already, he wasn't feeling the ball so well. So he's winning mostly with his confidence atm. He's trying to improve, to develop a different game, but he's givig himself some time to do it.

I am really happy for Gael. He is clearly still struggling to find his game, but he wins and has tremenduously progressed compared to his first match of the year at dubaï.

We are counting on you today, Gaelou
