Of course, tennis is a sport of riches. That's why I can't stand the players who make some caprices, or who don't play the OG cos there is no prize money.
Most of the athletes work still much harder than the tennisplayers (gymnasts, swimmers...) are don't get much money !

But Michael Phelps will get very very rich, with all his sponsors, + advertising, books, tv shows.... he's THE STAR

Yeah, he will get rich, very rich, but compared to say the 5 most famous tennis players (Rafa, Roger, Maria, Serena and Venus) he won't even come close.

It just seems a bit weird that only the top, top swimmers and gymnasts would be getting more than players who are ranked around Gael is right now - barely in the top 50 (I won't use Gael himself as an example because im sure he will be back in the top 20/10 very soon ). I mean obviously I wouldn't expect olympic sports like archery and sailing to be raking in the £s () but you'd think that sports like Gymnastics and Swimming which are very aesthetically pleasing and in some cases (esp. Gymnastics) even more so than tennis, to at least be comparable with tennis.

USO draw is out

He gets a qualifier in first round possibly Soderling in second round and Nalbandian in third.

Soderling and Nalbandian are both capable of being either very good or very bad, so potentially a dangerous section for Gael.

Söderling never is easy, but he doesn't do well in Slams, while it's rather the opposite with Gaël.
And Nalby is one of the best seeds he could get in the 3rd round since he had to play a 1-8 seed.
Very decent draw imo.

(On a personal note, no Petzsche in the 1st round in case he qualifies, pleasepleaseplease!)

He'll play Pablo Cuevas in the 1st round, not a bad draw.
I'm actually surprised Cuevas qualified since he seemed to be slumping quite badly lately.

Not very interesting, but it sounds like Gaël is looking fine (and not injured!):

US Open - Reporting Live for your convenience
"As for watching the action, if I go just by the way all the players were playing their practice games, the only players who looked like they deserve the top ranks were Murray and Monfils. (...)
Honestly, I have to say that every player with exception of Serena was nice. Andy Murray was so nice that even though my camera refused to work as I chased him for the photo, he kept asking me - are you ready yet, are you all set - all this while continuing to walk, but he asked with a genuine care rather than just to parry me off. He is so mature beyond his age. Monfils was another one who didn't hesitate to stop and sign and of course, with a great smile."

Not sure why Monfils-Cuevas is on Grandstand, but well, that's great for us!

Grandstand - 11:00 AM Start
1 Men's Singles - 1st Rnd.
Gael Monfils (FRA)[32] v. Pablo Cuevas (URU)

If Gael has his head in the right place today this should be straightforward, but if not, qualifiers are always potential banana skins and Cuevas could frustrate him. Either way, great that it's on a TV court, I wasn't expecting that either! Good luck Gael.

maybe because they like Gael a lot in the US and there are not so much big names who are playing today either.

Good luck Gael

Yes, I know it's because Gaël is popular in the US, but still, they could have picked an US boy or Nalby or Wawrinka-Bolelli...

Just saw SnooFoo says Cuevas was "amazing" in qualies, bad timing to come back in form if that's true!
But Gaël was definitely playing well enough in Beijing to beat him, I'm not worried yet.

The ES livestream isn't working at all so far, they've got 3 minutes to fix it.

Solid performance today, Korolev next, it will be their first match.

12 aces, 32 winners, 21 UE.
And he wasn't playing so far behind his baseline. Cuevas was a good occasion to try out new things too, let's see if he can do that against tougher opponents, but at least he's trying!

His audio interview on the FFT website:
It was a serious match, he had a good feeling, but some bad lapses of concentration. He's a bit disappointed because they had worked on a few things with Roger and he wasn't able to put them into practice today like he wanted to. The journalist tells him then that he's very demanding with himself and should be happy to have won in straight sets, but Gaël repeats he could have done better.
Then he's asked if he feels American and he answers he feels French with Guadelupian roots! He just likes the American culture and way of life.
It's pretty much the first time he feels well by the time of the US Open, without too many physical problems.
The journalist asks him if he feels in the same frame of mind as in Paris and he answers that when he enters a tournament, it's always with the idea of winning it anyway.
http://www.fft.fr/usopen/2008/?id=4009

He doesn't mention his ankle, it probably was nothing, as expected...

Statement of the day!

The article on the tournament website goes on and on about his "injury" ("he appeared to have nagging foot pain throughout the match that raises questions about his health once again at a Grand Slam.", etc.). He doesn't talk about it at all in the French interview.
