Default US Open Wildcard goes to Carsten Ball

Seeing as there are some rumblings in other threads about just who should get the US Open Wildcard, I thought that I would start a new thread for us to discuss who should get the US Open wildcard...

In my opinion, the three clear cut favourites are Robert Smeets, Samuel Groth and Brydan Klein. All three have had impressive results this season. All three have played at ATP Tour level this season. And all three have achieved career high rankings during the year.

There are some outsiders, namely Joe Sirianni, Carsten Ball, Colin Ebelthite and Nick Lindahl. But Sirianni is too old, under TA's youth policy for wildcards, Ball may represent Australia, but he has lived in the US his whole life. Will TA look upon that favourably? Colin Ebelthite is also too old under TA's youth policy, and Lindahl has been consistent, but not much more throughout the year...

Personally, I would like to see the wildcard go to either Groth or Klein. Both are young, both are talented. Both have significantly improved their rankings this year, and scored some good wins (particularly Groth).

So, feel free to voice your opinion

Good Thread I couldn't agree more. Groth for my money is, at present, the most deserving. A win over a top 50 player and numerous strong performances. (plus he missed one at the aussie)

Klein is certainly second on the list but would need a big performance in Manchester to edge out Groth. At 18 he will certainly have other chances.

Smeets has not really taken advantage of the two MD wildcards he has had this year. Tough draws but wasn't even competitive.

The Americans don't give WC's to over 23. If they can't make it on their own by then! Plus it needs to be given some time in advance so the player can prepare...unlike the aussie WC's.

These slam wildcards are becoming quite a conundrum for all the wrong reasons. We're really struggling for worthy contenders at the moment. Having said that, I think they should stick with Smeets. Klein is looking a decent prospect, but he hasn't beaten anyone in the top 400 since march and simply isn't up to that standard yet. Groth seems to be improving, but his results don't match Smeets. Don't forget, his win in Nottingham was against a guy coming back after a long layoff. The only other contender (if Luczak is still injured) would be Ball I think. Ebelthite is really not much more than a decent challenger player from what I've seen and Lindahl's struggling to make inroads this year, but could come good.

For what it is worth I would give it to either Samuel Groth or Carsten Ball who have both really improved their performances and results this year. Smeets may have a chance to qualify as could Joe Sirianni. I think that Brydan Klein is too young yet.

Groth or Smeets, depending on their result in thes enext few weeks, sirianni i wouldn't mind either, i know it goes against the youth policy but there's not a lot going for us.

Ok so technically he's too old, so we'll say Groth or Smeets. Either way, while Groth will be in with a shout if his serve is on, it'd be tough to see anyone else winning a round without a very kind draw but Smeets will probably get another crack at it.

Carsten Ball is in great form in the USA advancing to the semis of the 75K in aptos. He plays Kim in the semis after beating the second seed. I think he should get it as he has a great year and ploughed up the rankings. Failing him Sam Groth.

I agree that Carsten Ball should get it. He has been playing on the US Challenger circuit for some very good results and I would be very disappointed if he lost out to any other player except for Groth. Smeets has been handed two this year which have been accompanied with two thrashings. In regards to the older players such as Sirianni and Luczak (if he has recovered by then) I think they should go through qualifying as giving them a wildcard would defeat the purpose of it.

^^^^
Agree 100%
But I doubt Ball will get it because he isnt entirely in the TA 'loop' like Smeets, Groth and Klein are.
Realistically, it should be between Groth and Ball
