Default Gulbis on Nadal: I want to see him get my shots

Well, Gulbis sure can talk the talk.

From Tennis.com:

Gulbis on Nadal: I want to see him get my shots

Ernests Gulbis says that if he plays at the same level that he has over the past two weeks, he can upset Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of Indian Wells. Gulbis has won 13 straight matches, including five in qualifying in Delray Beach and Indian Wells. He has played Nadal four times, losing each contest, but every one of them was close.

“I think the way I play right now, that should make a difference,” Gulbis told reporters. “I believe that I can win. I like to play against him because his ball and his heavy spin, it's good for my timing. I don't like when the opponents hit flat, deep balls. I like the opponents hit spin, high balls. It's easier for me to control them. So honestly I like to play against him. I had close matches. I had three sets twice [as well as a four-set loss], and just in the third set lack of experience, lack of fitness, lack of everything, and then he just broke me down. I know how he plays. And of course he's a great player, but I honestly believe that if I play my best game I can beat him.”

Gulbis added that trying to hit winners against Nadal isn’t much different than against other players.

“I'm telling you, if I'm going to hit a winner it's gonna be a winner. Doesn't matter if it's gonna be Nadal or whoever," Gulbis said. "I'm going to go for my shots, of course maybe [it] is going to take me more than one shot. Maybe it's going to take me two shots. But I'm going to be ready for it. One shot one corner, one shot other corner. I want to see him get it.”

Gulbis says so much and does so little.

Spicy comments by Gulbis, absolutely love it. Love his confidence, his 'bring it on' mentality. Not afraid to talk a bit of trash.

Let's see if he can deliver.

The problem is, even if he does beat Nadal we know this will end like Rome 2010 where he can only beat one top player before losing to the next he plays.

Have the feeling he'll beat Nadal and then lose to a random. Fine with me.

Of course MTF will love him for saying this. Yet if it wss him saying he could beat Fed they would hate on him. Remember when Tomic said he could beat fed? Of course MTF hypocrites hated on Tomic.for saying something that could happen.

Can't wait for Rafito to own the hell out of this jock 0 and 0

Nothing wrong with being confident here. Let's be honest - this is probably Gulbis' best chance to beat Nadal that he has ever had. And most players lose the game against the top players even before stepping out on a court just because they don't believe they can actually win. This is certainly a right mindset for these kind of games.

Saying it and believing it are two completely different things. To me, shouting it out loud for everyone to hear actually says he does not believe he can win, but we will see. With Nadal not back to his best, this is Gulbis' best chance.

Silence is golden. Federer, Nadal, Sampras, Borg...most of the tennis legends were silent types. But then again, every now and then you get someone like Connors or McEnroe.

I actually prefer him saying this than the usual generic "compliments" most players exchange before the match and that for the most part are total bullshit.

I also think this is the right attitude, he needs to take it to Nadal and not be afraid of him. After all he's only human.

Of course it's easier said than done so he now needs to deliver on court and play his best tennis. Only then he as a chance to beat him. If he plays like yesterday, Nadal will blow him off the court.

Sure, it is definitely more entertaining for the fans, and I love it, too, but I feel that saying it definitely doesn't help his chances, or his belief. He will just motivate Rafa even more.

I remember when Djokovic - young and naive back then - said something similar before his match with Federer at AO, and he got beaten badly. Certainly didn't help him.
