In L'Equipe:
Quote:
It was a race against time and he understood at the end of last week that he had lost. "Frankly, I thought until the very last minute I would go to Beijing, he said yesterday. I tried to speed things up during the rehab at home in Switzerland in the past few weeks. But Montalvan (the FFT doctor) made me undergo medical tests on Friday which showed little inflammations. So we'll have to wait." If everything goes well, he will be back for New Heaven (18-24.08). His team has been saying since the beginning they won't make him take the risk of a premature comeback given his medical history.

It doesn't sound very good, I'm not sure he resumed the training on Monday like he wanted to with these "little inflammations".

Poor Jo. How frustrated he must feel. He's got the motivation, the will, the love of the game - yet his body fails him.

I'm a bit worried - if he's not ready for the Olympic games, I doubt his body can take the punishment of five-setters on hard courts at the US Open. Ideally, he should test himself in small tournaments before such a big event, but of course, he doesn't have that choice.

I miss him so badly. I missed him especially at Wimbledon where I thought he could make his greatest impact. BUT, The way things are at the moment, I would rather he take as long as he needs, even if he has to miss the rest of 2008 season, so that his body will be healthy, primed and solid for the 2009 challenges and much beyond.

Take courage Tsonga. We'll be waiting for you.

There also was a short interview on the ES website:
http://www.eurosport.fr/tennis/balle...72/story.shtml
Since the medical tests of last week showed an inflammation of the knee, he couldn't resume the training on Monday like he was supposed to. The doc told him to rest a few days and then go on with the rehab in the gym and in the swimming pool. It's a bit dull, but he's still in good spirits.
He always had the Games in mind to keep going. Now he will focus on the USO. He feels ready to come back at a Grand Slam without playing any tournament before. He already did it in the past.
About the AO final, he admits it's something special, he thought he would be able to "digest" it quite easily, but it's true it isn't so easy.
The goal: to win a title, why not?
He doesn't have any points to defend until the US Open anyway. He has some points to defend after the USO, but he doesn't worry about that. If he plays well, he will defend them.

I really have missed watching Jo play so much during all this time I hope he recovers fully, and manages to finally stay clear from injury for a lengthy period of time after that.

He's still in rehab, no tennis yet.

Tsonga renonce à New Haven
He pulled out of New Heaven, but still hopes to play the USO. He needs at least 3 weeks of training to be able to play and he hasn’t started playing tennis yet. He will have some medical tests in the next few days and hopes to be able to play again on Monday. But always the same story: they won’t take any risk.

He started training again!
Quote:
He’s allowed to play only two times 30 minutes a day and they will add 10 minutes every 4 days. But he’s already so happy to be back on a tennis court and feels very well. He also does 45 minutes of cycling every day + he works on his upper body in the gym. Wino: "It’s not much, but we have no other choice." They’re supposed to leave for the States on the 17th of August. It will be a bit short to be really fit for the USO, but Jo definitely wants to play.
