from DPA:

Federer carries Monte Carlo momentum into Italy

Rome - Roger Federer will tackle the Rome Masters starting on Monday content with occasional telephone guidance from new trial coach Jose Higueras as the Swiss continues his French Open preparation. But it's all going according to plan for the precision Team Federer, with the world number one pleased with his first two practise sessions at the Foro Italico, playing on a former main court with a new showpiece stadium under construction.

"I have had good practise and am feeling good about my game," the Swiss said on Sunday a week after losing the Monte Carlo final to Rafael Nadal. "I'm just waiting for it to start."

The top eight seeds have byes, which means the number one won't know his first opponent until Guillermo Canas and Italian wildcard Giancarlo Naso play.

Federer is happy to consult occasionally with clay master Higueras from the Spaniard's Californian base until the pair meet again for Roland Garros training the week before the start of the May 25 Grand Slam.

"We spoke after the Monte Carlo final but not since," said a relaxed Federer. "We are still getting to know each other."

Under the trial arrangement with Higueras, Federer won Estoril on clay and got into another battle in Monte Carlo with Nadal.

"Those weeks were about getting to know each other," said the top seed, who has lost two Rome finals appearances against Spaniards, the last Nadal in a 2006 classic.

"Jose probably didn't want to tell me too much at the start. You don't want to be changing your game during matches. I have played 10 matches in 14 days with him, so it's early to tell how it is going."

Federer said that tests this week showed that he is back to full fitness after his glandular fever scare from early in the season.

"Everything medical is fine. This is probably the first time that I have really felt 100 percent. It's all good again."

Federer has taken little notice of what term a "difficult" draw.

He could face fifth-seeded Spanish specialist David Ferrer in the last eight and possibly Novak Djokovic or Argentina's David Nalbandian in the semis.

"I only look at who I play and who I might play if I win. You cannot change the draw anyway."

Another report from vishido (Ricardo) on rf.com

Quote:
http://www.rogerfederer.com/en/fanzo...23069&uPage=21
He started his session hitting the ball 2-3m out the court and then he did an intense training session: he worked at net (about 40mins) and then he worked on service and high ball in middle camp! Session was intense and temperature very hot, Federer ended the session complitely wet.

ROGER'S RESTED AND GOOD TO GO
A relaxed Roger Federer came to answer some questions in the pre-tournament press conference.

At 4pm the interview room of the Foro Italico all of a sudden filled up as though something was going to happen. Sure enough, a tall figure walked in with an "RF" cap on his head. Journalist's from all over the world sat down quickly and hushed up in order to listen to the (other) "Great One". Here are some of the topics that were covered :

His new coach Jose Higueras
"Jose will only be joining me in Paris. The truth is we have not yet had enough time to really start working together in depth. Before Roland-Garros it will be nice because we will have some time to train and work. In Estoril and Monte-Carlo it was difficult because when you are in a tournament you don't have the same time to focus on specifics"

His biggest clay court rival : Rafael Nadal
"I was in the final of Hambourg 4 times and won each time. I was in the final of Monte-Carlo 3 times and always lost to Rafa. Maybe had I not played him in the finals I would have won that tournament."

Being up 4-0 in the second set of the final and losing
"Had I been up 4-0 on Rafa on any other surface I would have probably won 6-1 or 6-2, but on clay it's a completly different story. For Rafa on clay nothing is impossible."

What he can improve
"There is not much to change in my game. Maybe I can serve a bit better and try and improve my attacking game, but all in all I'm pretty happy with what I've done up to know on clay. Estoril was difficult due to the changing weather conditions, and in Monte-Carlo I had a dicy 1st round (he was down 5-1 in the 3rd set to Spaniard Ramirez-Hidalgo) and then a good few wins versus Monfils and Nalbandian"

His draw
"I usually don't look at the entire draw. I prefer to focus on my upcomming match as well as who I would play if I move on. I also take a look at what seeds are in my half, but that's it I don't look at who's playing who in all the different rounds"

What he did during his week off
"I took a few days off to rest and then I started hitting again to prepare for this week. I got here yesterday (Saturday) and played 3 hours and 2 today."

His fitness
"I feel good, I did some tests last week and everything is good"

All in all the world number 1 seems confident comming in to the second clay court Masters-Series of the season. His main concern, and rightfully so is "Rafa". And even though he did not say it, deep down, beating him in the final is a challenge he would love to overcome.

Why does he need a tough draw? I bet players never dream about having a bad match up/hot player/dangerous floater, etc. in their section.

Canas is not looking too impressive, but who knows, great memories from IW/Miami might kick in.

I don't think Roger will get "Volandried" by Canas. I suspect one tight set though.

It's pretty funny how people change their tune. Last year, after the two defeats to Canas, people called it a "matchup" problem even though it was clear that if Fed hits his shots, he wipes the floor with Canas. Now everyone is predicting an easy victory.

Good grinders/counterpunchers have caused problems for Fed before but he can usually overpower them with his B game nowadays. Unfortunately, his B game was absent during the spring HC season last year so I can sort of understand the logic. Cañas has the additional advantage of a decent serve.

GM should however be renamed KJRM since now they are predicting a bagel and breadstick based on recent results. It will be much tighter than that.
