Well, it was encouraging and at the same time.
His game is there, he's hitting the ball nicely imo, but he has terrible concentration lapses. He looked totally in control, should have won the first set 6-1, had his usual hiccups by taking his chances and serving it out, but well, it was OK.

But the second set... Malisse started playing better too, but Gilles totally lost the plot, he was mad because it was too loud (it was horribly loud indeed) and played crap. He regrouped just in time and Malisse helped A LOT, Gilles really was lucky to win in 2 sets!

If he keeps his head together, I think he does have a chance against Murray because he was playing well before he went . Malisse was pretty poor, though.
He seems to still have a cold, keeps blowing his nose like in Rome.

I'm back already. :-/
I see now my post yesterday didn't sound very enthusiastic, I actually was nicely surprised by his game, I found his shots really clean and pretty fast for a "pusher" (first time I saw him play a match live, and I was a bit afraid I might find him a "pusher" myself!) and it definitely was a great effort to come back in the 2nd set - but it was just unnecessary.
It won't be a problem this time since he'll have more than 2 days to recover, but he always loses energy in the first rounds without any reason. It could have been a 6-2 6-3 win.

After having watched Andy today, I have to say Andy looked more impressive to me, though. I was very impressed by him, even if Tursunov made him look good too, I'm aware of that.

(I don't know why I mentioned the cold, btw, he seems fine.)

I also watched his doubles match, of course. Adorable team, but I can't remember Gilles holding once during the whole match. His return wasn't impressive either and his volleys looked like warming-up volleys at best (at the net, he's a complete "pusher" indeed), so... I enjoyed it because he looked really hot and it was nice to see him smiling (he was quite grumpy against Malisse), but it was not a highlight.
Waske was screaming "Come on!!!!" everytime they broke, it looked a bit stupid since they got the break everytime Gillou was serving. ^^

Anyway, I was so lucky with the schedule, with Gilles playing on Sunday already, then the 2 other players I wanted to see on Monday + I couldn't believe it when I saw he was playing doubles with Jo!!

I’m still catching up with the news of the last few days, here’s what he said after his win over Malisse:
Quote:
SIMON VA MIEUX.
He means it was reassuring. First for his back: maybe he still is a bit too careful, but at least he isn’t feeling any pain anymore. And also for his game: he got a new set of racquets before Rome and has a better feeling now. His shots are there. He’s not moving at his best yet, but it’s coming back. There's nothing to compare with Monte-Carlo or Rome.

Labamba says he has applied for a WC in Pörtschach next week, but since he's competing with Gasquet (?), Ferrero and El Aynaoui, I think his chances are pretty low.

Court 1 tomorrow again, I hope he will deal better with the noise from the Center Court this time!
Court M1 starting at 11:00 CEST
Juan MONACO (ARG) vs. Simone BOLELLI (ITA)
followed by
James BLAKE (USA) vs. Janko TIPSAREVIC (SRB)
followed by
Robin SODERLING (SWE) vs. Jo-Wilfried TSONGA (FRA)
followed by
Andy MURRAY (GBR) vs. Gilles SIMON (FRA)

His reaction in L’Equipe:
Quote:
Murray was very motivated yesterday - after having missed a shot, he even hit his racquet so hard that his fingers were bleeding.
Gilles wasn't consistent enough and Andy never gave him a chance. "The scoreline is harsh", Gilles pleads (I agree!). (The next sentence is a bit strange in French too, I don't know how to say that in English: ) "I have a lot of game in my racquet at the moment, but I don’t manage to translate it in my matches."
Maybe next week in Casablanca where he hopes to get the WC Gasquet won’t need…

Jo is going to play Casa with a WC, maybe he can "blackmail" them a little bit - "I'm playing your event (they don't have one single top 50 player on the entry list atm, it must be big for them to get Jo), please also give a WC to my buddy Gillou"?

And there's a big French influence there, so they should definitely give Poussin one.

No, they gave it to El Aynaoui (better decision, TBH, there wasn't one single local player in the main draw otherwise!), he has to play the qualies:

(1) SIMON, Gilles FRA/BYE
BELAL, Chemseddine MAR v (WC) BENKIRANE, Saad MAR
CERMAK, Frantisek CZE v KERR, Jordan AUS
BYE/(6) NASO, Gianluca ITA

Never heard of these players. Shouldn't be too hard to qualify and that's good because he will win a couple of easy matches to put his game in the right way
