There you go *wipes forehead* Please disregard all the grammar mistakes and french-icisms. I wouldn't have translated anything that long for any other than Jo

Quote:
- You're the last elite player to start your clay season, less than a month before RG starts. Why wait for so long ?
- Before, it would have been too soon. To make a result at Roland, I had to adapt to clay, but slowly. It also meant taking a rest because I played a lot since January. I needed to find again that will to play. It was important for me to cut between the hard and clay season.

- What does that mean in JWT's mouth, "make a result in Roland" ?
- It means win matches, go as far as possible, telling myself that I fought, that I did everything I could, that I lost against a much stronger guy than me, if I lose...

- Before Rome you had entered Barcelona where you withdrew, more by precaution, because of a pain in the knee. At the slightest problem, judging by your past, we begin to freak out. Do you understand those worries ?
- It's annoying because it's a picture that has been following me. I have little problems like Roger has for the back, or Rafa for his knees, and yet nobody says the two of them are physically frail. In Bercy, I won 4 three-setters in 6 days and nobody said then that I had been physically fit, but still... It's like in Davis Cup, where I would hear everywhere that I wasn't able to play the three days... "is he going to be physically okay ?" is what everyone writes about me. But I think, on the contrary, that the physical part is one of my strengths.

- Not trying to upset you, but two years ago you deliberetely withdrew from RG saying "each time I tried to play on clay, I hurt myself." Maybe that's partly why we keep talking about it...
- Yes but that's the past. Last year I had a good run on clay. My knee injury didn't appear because of the surface, it was already there. The year before I had played team matches on clay. These last seasons, I had problems when clay was just around the corner, but it wasn't necessarily because of the surface. Sometimes I injured myself just before the clay season and I couldn't imagine play never ending matches on it.

- Wasn't it heartbreaking to give up on RG 2007 without being injured ?
- Actually I was already preparing the grass season. I had some good results on hard courts, I had played a lot, given a lot away and that's why we decided not to attend RG. But I was practicing there, at the CNE. I was coming very early in the morning on a bicycle because I couldn't stand to start after the day of matches had begun. The thought that I wasn't part of the fiesta, it was so hard. So I was leaving very early too, as soon as the practice was over, trying to forget Roland was happening.

- You had a wildcard back in 2005, but do you feel like in a month will begin your very first Roland ?
- Yes, it's a bit like that. That's why there is a lot of excitement and desire to be good. It's the first time I feel like I'm at the level to play there. In 2005 I lost against Roddick, so... this is the first I'll be really able to show what I'm made of in Roland.

- And this clay, reassure us, you love it ?
- It's the surface of my childhood, I grew up on it. In my first club in Coulaines (near the Mans), I was having collective lessons on clay. I was always playing with the grand-daddys of the club who just wouldn't stop dropshotting me. Clay means my first French junior champion title, my Europe junior champion title, where I beat Berdych, Baghdatis, Nadal... Clay means world team champion titles. My first ATP tournaments were also on clay. I had beaten Andreev to win my first ATP points. Those are strong memories.

- People say that real tennis is on clay. What are your sensations ?
- I take pleasure whenever I play on clay. In fact, I love it ! When I wake up in the morning and I remember I'm going to have a clay practice, I'm like a freak. I know I'm going to slide and hit great shots, engage physically. On hard, you want to give your everything but it hurts. On clay, it's softer, changing directions isn't hard on the body, you're sliding. I do think I prefer clay to hard. But the truth is that I prefer grass above everything else, so...

- Are you going to try a different game style on clay ?
- I'm going to get round my backhand and hit lifted forehands a lot more. I'll have more time and I'll be able to hit really "big" balls.

- But isn't clay the most difficult for you, since you have an attacking game?
- Future will tell us (smile) I keep faith for Roland because grand slam matches, 5 setters, are the best for me. Physically, I'm fit. My offensive game, on the first two sets, forces me to take a lot of risks, but when the fourth set comes along, the guy is going to have to run on the cannonballs I'm going to send. The guys will have to run a lot and stay fast for a few hours which is the most difficult to do.

- You said Pat Rafter was one of your idol with his attacking style. He won USO 97 and 98 but also made semis in Roland. Is he an inspiration on clay ?
- What I know is that I'll be more at ease with a serve and volley on clay than on hard. I'll have more time to get to the net. Guys like Rafter who didn't really have the game to win on clay but who were physical beasts and loved never-ending matches, they succeeded in stuff nobody thought they will, and it gives me even more will to believe in it.

- Believe you can beat clay specialists for example ?
- This challenge, I gave it to myself because I want to do well. Yes, I want to proove things to people who think I can't play on clay. But I want to proove it to myself before everything.

- You are now waiting to meet Richard Gasquet in Roma. What are you going to focus on ? Sensations ? trying to get use to clay on competition ?
- Only one goal : winning. In Roma like in all the tournaments that will follow. What is going to make me better is winning matches. From there will come the confidence. And in tennis, confidence takes a huge part.

- You will need a lot of it to challenge on clay, for example, a certain Nadal...
- Rafa, I would love to play him on clay, but maybe not right now. If I could play him in quarters in Roland, that would be fabulous !

Thank you Keijan for the great interview and translation. Great job Love his positive comments about his attacking game on clay, and his self-belief about grass (which affirms my own belief in his abilities on that surface)

An article after his loss against Gasquet :

Brief translation by me :

He knows he still has some work to do, but is still confident he can do something really good for RG. "The match didn't go well for me, so I was a little frustrated by all the missed breakpoints. I need to be more patient, to work some more on better solutions and to be more relaxed. It's going to take some time, but I am confident, it will come. " On the clay : "It's not a bad surface for me.I like to play on it. I prepare on it, I am training on it. Even if I lose, it's not some time wasted". On RG : "It's the summit I want to climb. I want to be at my best there. If the weather is sunny, it can be very quick, a good thing for me. This is the thing I think about the most. I hope this is the good year for me. "

Interview of Jo on the site of madrid masters :

Tsonga speaks with Madrid OpenQuestion. Now it is a very good moment for the French tennis, how much more it can improve?

A. It is good to have three players in the Top 10 and we push each other up all the time. But I don’t want to stop there, I want to win another Masters 1000 title and a Grand Slam.

Q. What is the most difficult or hard in the live of a tennis player?

Friday May 1, 2009 A. Sometimes it is hard to spend a lot of time on planes or at the airports but we cannot complain, we have a pretty good life as tennis players.

Q. You have got three tournaments for the moment, which one has been the most satisfaction you have felt?

A. Winning the Paris Masters 1000 title last year was an amazing experience, in front of my crowd and also qualifying for Shanghai. It was an incredible week for me.

Q. What are your goals for this year?

A. I want to keep improving and give all my best.

Q. Rafa Nadal said after winning Australian Open that he was going to have a room to keep all his trophies, where do you keep yours?

A. I keep them at home, I don’t have as many as Rafa.

Q. Finally, a question almost obligatory, what expectations do you have for the new tournament in Madrid, the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open?

A. I look forward to playing in the new site, I have heard it will be very good with the roof and a lot of courts.

Nothing really new, but it's always good to keep an eye open on his ambitions and the draw of madrid is coming.

There's an article in L'equipe that says Gasquet is suspended for Roland Garros. They included a few words from Jo:
http://www.lequipe.fr/Tennis/breves2...rovisoire.html

Here is the Jo bit:
11/05/2009
"A Madrid, les joueurs français préfèrent ne pas commenter "l'affaire". Attristé pour son copain, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a juste répondu : « Je suis très triste de ce qui se passe. J'espère que cela va bien se passer pour lui. Je n'ai pas forcément envie de répondre à toutes ces questions, cela me regarde et cela dépasse le sport. Je n'ai pas envie d'en parler.» "
Somewhat translation: In Madrid the French tennis players preferresnot to comment on "the incident." Sorry for his buddy, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga just said: éI am very sorry about what happened. I hope this will all be over for him. I don't really want to answer all these questions, i see it and it is beyond sport. (Translator's Note: This sentence is very likely wrong). I don't feel like talking about it."
