Well, maybe he will be more agressive and less "respectueux" next time he'll play Fed. But that's truly sad cause he would have had his chances by being more serious.

If every french player is so nice with Fed when they play him, I understand why Fed likes to play the frenchies
Exactly, I was afraid of that by reading his interviews before the match, it's a real problem with the Frenchies, they're way too much in love with Fed.
Q. Do you have any regrets?
GAËL MONFILS: Yes. I should have been more into the match. Instead, I was too happy.

That's cute to admit it, Gaël, but grrrrrr... I didn't like his attitude either, that's also why I stopped watching, not only because of the insane court positioning. I like it when he's a "good warrior", like he always says, yesterday's match looked so "blah".

Default Re: Clay season 2008

The article in L'Equipe isn't exactly very nice about his performance:
Quote:
Toi Goliath,moi David
I should have kept watching though because I didn't see when Gaël missed a shot so badly that Fed had to laugh, it's not in the highlights on AMS.tv.
When journalists ask him why he stays 150 m behind his baseline, he answers Nadal does it too and it works for him...

Default Re: Clay season 2008

And I know Fed always is very good at flattering the Frenchies and I don't take what he says about them too seriously, but Gaël's reach was indeed quite amazing:
Q. How did you think he played today compared with the previous match against him in Miami? Did he improve?
ROGER FEDERER: He's a very good player. This hasn't changed since the first time I played him in Doha. I was impressed by his game, by the way he moves, and by his athleticism. I don't know how long he stayed off the courts, but it was a while, and still his game is moving forward.
He is making a good comeback. The match today was similar to the one in Miami. I was trying to dictate the game. But, of course, he was more aggressive in Miami, which is normal on hardcourts.
It is amazing how from the baseline he can read all the shots. I made no aces - Karlovic either. He has an excellent reach. I had to play well, otherwise it wouldn't have been enough against him.

Ouch, considering the Munich field, it's not a good draw.
(Plus, on a personal note, I don't like Andreev and I'll be pissed if he loses to him.)

But the rest of his draw is not bad, he just needs to beat Andreev somehow.

Andreev leads 2-1 in the h2h, but they have never played on clay:
2005 Marseille Hard (I) I.ANDREEV 3-6 2-6
2006 Paris Open Carpet (I) I.ANDREEV 5-7 4-6
2007 Queen's Grass (O) G.MONFILS 6-3 6-4

And the 2006 match doesn't count, Gaël only played because it was in Bercy. It's 1-1 in the h2h.

He plays tomorrow, but not on the Center Court:

Court 4 12.00 pm
Evgeny KOROLEV vs Philipp PETZSCHNER
followed by
Rainer SCHUETTLER vs Gianluca NASO
followed by
Gael MONFILS vs Igor ANDREEV

We hardly get any coverage on German TV anyway (not even one hour a day on the local TV channel), the event is worse than ever...

He could have won at least one set!
I guess he will play the Rome qualies now, he doesn't seem to have entered any other event for next week.

I see he has also entered Warsaw (on clay) after the French Open. I know he doesn't like grass at all, but he wasn't that bad last year with his big serve, I was hoping he would have changed his mind about it.

In l’Equipe today - "Monfils against a wall":
Quote:
One break in each set (at 2-1 in the 1st set and 2-2 in the 2nd one) and the terrible feeling of having been run over by a tank. He saved a 5-1 point in the 1st set, but missed 4 rebreak chances then to come back 4-2 (one of them with a silly BH error). He was staying far behind his baseline, like in MC, running and running, but in vain. "He gave me a real hammering! He was hitting real bombs! He never let me dictate the game. I tried to fight, I was feeling fast, but he was too good. I’m going to play the qualies in Rome now because I’m hungry for matches."

And he came to Munich alone, without Champion.

He won 6-4 6-2 - nothing to celebrate, though, since this Sanchez guy is ranked out of the top 1000.

He plays Patience tomorrow at 12:00 for a spot in the main draw.
Allez!
