Second win in straight sets.
I don't even know who he is playing next.

Melzer? I thought Melzer couldn't win a match anymore to save his life?

my compatriote Jürgen Melzer, who played an endless five-setter today. Melzer is a mixture of genius and desaster (10 % genius, 90 % desaster), so it can get funny.

Gaël's desaster percentage is quite high too!
But he has a little guardian angel when he plays in Paris.

I had no idea he had such an easy draw! I mean, I know he can lose to Melzer, but he'll be the favourite again, I wasn't expecting that.

I always put him high in Roland Garros, he and Gulbis were my dark horses on GM.

Congratulations to Monfils, though he almost killed me today with the dramatics at the end of the 3rd set. Oh well, glad he won and Melzer match should be very interesting. Did it look as if Gael was injured or just tired? I was listening to RG radio and they were saying that Champion was telling Gael, "One more point, just one more point," at the end of the match to get him through.

No, he was not injured, just tired. At one time, he fell on his hip, that's why I said he looked injured, but it was nothing serious. Always hard to know with him, he's grimacing so much - and yesterday more than ever. ^^

In L'Equipe today:
Quote:

QU’A GAGNÉ hier soir Gaël Monfils ?
Je suis derrière, ça me va.

Default Re: Clay season 2008

I have no time to translate, but it's a quite funny description of the match for people who understand French. "ER" on Suzanne Lenglen at the end of the 3rd set.
Gaël says he was cramping on his serve, but Champion is not worried, he saw Gaël's face after the match and he was not looking that exhausted in his opinion.
The journalist points out he's one of the least disappointing Frenchies in RG every year - or maybe even the least disappointing Frenchie. Gaël means there are less expectations towards him and it's perfect for him. But he has high expectations for himself. He's happy to play in Paris in front of his family and his friends. And one needs to be happy to play well.
Of course, the journalist goes on observing that he might be happy, but that doesn't mean he's playing well. "Not yet", Champion answers.

Horna helped a lot yesterday. Gaël admits he often lost his concentration because of his serve which was not working the way he wanted. He managed to win somehow, but it was a bit of a mess.
The journalist says there is a lot to criticize about Monfils for sure, but not his fierce determination. His game is lifeless, his FH not as big as it should be, but the guy is hanging on and working hard.
Champion: if some people thought that Gaël was going to come back on the tour and crush everybody around with huge FH winners and tons of aces, they were dreaming. He had warned Gaël that he would need to win matches by the sweat of his brow before being able to play well again. And that's what Gaël is doing. He's still alive and Champion is so happy for him. When they talk about RG, Champion doesn't tell him the goal is to reach the 2nd week, he talks about winning the tournament. He isn't boasting. He just doesn't want to be too "timorous", too French.

(That's what Champion says at the end, not Gaël - he gets criticized for talking too big, but if Champion himself is talking with him that way...)

Interesting indeed. You know Monfils has had so many close matches at RG that he has gotten through against quality players. Anyhoo, Champion is talking big!!! Dunno, if I had Gael as a contender for RG (4 in the mix, interesting indeed).

Wake up, Gaëlou! Melzer is playing well, but Gaël is really "off" too. Lifeless.

OMG, he doesn't really deserve that set, his shots are so slow and short and... blah. Melzer was leading 2-0, then had tons of BP at the end of the set - I was really afraid he would be sent home in straight sets this time.

Allez, Gaëlou, we know you're much better than that!

This match is such a pain to watch, of course it was going to go the full distance...

Melzer is completely crazy to give away a set just like that. Doesn't he know about Gaël's condition problems?
