El Greco (Dominicos Theotokopoulos) 1541-1614

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz

Christ driving the Traders from the Temple

Fifth seal of the apocalypse

I'm far from an expert, but I love art and El Greco's works strike me for the magnificent vivid colors (hard to appreciate in these photos though) and the haunting depiction of human and divine figures

to you
Michelangelo is the reason I really started to love art. I went on a trip to Italy with a friend of mine when I was about 16 or 17 we spent 3 days in particular in Florence where I first saw the David , among others, and then we went to Rome and I discovered the Pieta I find it incredibly amusing that before painting the Sistine Chapel Michelangelo thought of himself merely as a sculptor

There a zillion I could post, so I'll pace myself here.

Abendland (Twilight of the West) by Anselm Kiefer in 1989

Boca Museum by Sandro Chia in 1997

One more (for now) :

Faceless by Marlene Dumas in 1993

Thanks a lot Metis, I loved the second one and the colour of the third remind me of some of Veronese's paintings

this thread, thanks for starting it.

I'll post some of my favorites:

Swallows the Poisoned Apple by Paula Rego - 1995.
Paula is so awesome & dark. Exactly how i like it.
The Two Fridas by Frida Kahlo - 1939
I love her so much & have a copy of this one in my house.
Las Meninas by Velázquez
never particulary like this one, but I spend a good hour staring at it in the Prado Museum in Madrid last year.
Quite intriguing.

I'll definitely post some more later.

I've always loved Picasso and Van Gogh.

There's something yummy about big globs of paint, which may explain my enjoyment of the latter.

A remarkably modern painting by Goya (1746-1828) which has always disturbed me...

When I went to Italy, they were working on the David statue so it was not available for the public. I love sculptures (Rodin is a master as well) so I'd love to see it one day.

Great thread. I'm far from an art expert, though, but here's a sample of what I like.

Let me see, I like Paul Klee:
"Dieser Stern lehrt beugen" (1940)

Keith Haring

Pieter Brueghel, the Elder
The Tower of Babel (1563)

The crazy world of Hieronymus Bosch
Triptych: The Garden of Earthly Delights (1503 - 1504)

...and when that triptych is shut, you get this painting on the shutters:
