Default Spring hardcourt season 2008

The Dubai draw is out, he probably won't last long, but never mind, it's just good to see his name in a draw again:

David Ferrer (4) v Tommy Haas
Jarkko Nieminen v Olivier Rochus
Janko Tipsarevic v Feliciano Lopez
Gael Monfils v Tomas Berdych (8)

I can't watch too closely, but apparently he's not doing well, big UE from the baseline everytime I watch...
He should have played the qualies imo, it's really too hard to start against a guy like Berdych.

Already over, with another ugly UE to end the match.

I don't get why he didn't enter Sunrise between IW and Miami because he really, really needs match practice.

, well like you said Truc, Berdych was too strong for Gael today. There were som good shots from time to time but all in all, he made too many UEs.

In l'Equipe today:
Quote:
Là, on a dû changer d’hôtel, ça gonfle.
FRANCK RAMELLA
The pic is terrible once again - I've never noticed that "XV" necklace before, has it a special meaning?

Default Re: Spring hardcourt season 2008

Champion stresses he was doing much better in training in Paris - he couldn't force because his body is still "vulnerable", but he was playing at a decent level. Yesterday was crap. He obviously couldn't deal with the new conditions in Dubai after having trained indoors and with the anxiety of the comeback. He wasn't going for his shots compared to what he was doing in training, he had no footwork, he wasn't hitting at all his BH, he was looking lost out there as soon as he was broken, etc. etc.
Gaël: Of course I got a spanking and people are going to comment on it. But I had no marks/ I was disorientated. It's not easy when you're lacking adjustment and confidence... All the more since I couldn't serve during 2 days because of my elbow. I can serve better than that. Against Berdych I tried to hit a few serves to see if my elbow was fine, but the 2nd serve wasn't fast. I need more intense training sessions, I need to test myself more in training, but as soon as I push a little bit further, I get injured... At least I had the chance to be back on a tennis court to check my level and remember how the pressure feels in competition.
And to conclude a typical "La Monf" statement:
"My goal still is to become the number 1. And if you want to be the best, you should never give up."

When will he get a break? Bad draw for Gaëlou again in Indian Wells:

[12] GONZALEZ, Fernando (CHI) vs BYE
[WC] ANCIC, Mario (CRO) vs MONFILS, Gael (FRA)
JOHANSSON, Thomas (SWE) vs QUALIFIER
BYE vs FERRERO, Juan Carlos (ESP) [22]

Another expected spanking, poor boy.

I hope he'll play Sunrise, I have no idea why he didn't enter it, but he can probably get a WC as title holder (Ancic won't use his).
But actually, I even wish he would play the Sunrise qualies to get more matches under his belt...

I agree, Sunrise would be a good idea, he just needs some matches under his belt. Plus he's got points to defend.

A few lines in L’Equipe, it doesn’t sound that bad at all (somebody who saw the match also said in GM it was actually closer than the scoreline suggests):
Quote:
The journalist means the conditions were terrible and keeping the ball inside the court was a feat. Ancic was a tad lucky to get the break in the first set (two netcords and a return hit with the frame of the racquet) and his confidence made all the difference in the 2nd set. But Gaël never gave up and seems to be back in the mix.
Gaël finds the scoreline harsh and means there also were some bad calls against him in the 2nd set. But he keeps giving his best in training. If he keeps up the good work, his luck will change eventually.

And it looks like he’s going to play Sunrise.

Hmmm, he isn't in the qualifying draw of Sunrise and isn't mentioned in the articles about the players who have asked for a WC either...
I don't know, they didn't give any further explanation yesterday, just wrote "Next tournament: Sunrise Challenger".

It looks like Nieminen, Nishikori, Hrbaty and Gonzo got the Sunrise WC, I wonder why he didn't enter the qualifying draw.
