apparently Jimmy Connors also learnt to play on wood

Jimmy said in an interview that the fast/low bouncing wood surface taught him to take the ball early & use an abbreviated backswing (not enough time to take a big Nadal like swipe at the ball).

Is this the same kind of wood that they use on squash courts?

I play a lot of squash myself. This surface can get slippery when wet, but with the right shoes it's not that bad.

I play during winter almost every week indoors on wood. It's super fast and I hate it. You can murder someone if you hit hard enough There are no long rallies. But my serve and my two-handed backhand are f*cking clicking. The drop shot doesn't work properly. It continues towards the opponent and doesn't stay low. The slice also doesn't have the desired effect. It acts as a normal flat shot. And the lob. It's a killer. If you let it pass you over there is no way you can run backwards and get it.

I've played a ton of matches opn a local wood court. That particular court is INSANELY fast and the bounce is very low - the ball just skids off the court. So it definitely doesn't suit players who can't volley for shit, like myself. I'm a decent server though, so I still did okay. Angled sliced serves are extremely effective since the ball just skids away from the receiver. Kick serves are useless, though.

Yes, I forgot to mention this sliced serve from deuce court - my favourite serve along with the serve down the middle at AD court. Both are unreturnable.
BlueSwan, it's true kick serves don't work but since I am not a good kick server I cannot say for sure.

Don't know about that tie with Argentina but I read about this one:

http://www.daviscup.com/ties/tie.asp?tie=10003528

Indeed, that tie was played against Paraguay and France in 1988. The French went with Yannick Noah and Leconte over there and couldn't covercame all the terrible conditions the paraguayans imposed - not only an impossible wooden court, but the arena where it was played had leakings on the ceilings and was quite slippery it seems.

I've played on a wood court and it was okay but yes they are very fast and big servers on those would never play a set which didn't go to a breaker.

Default How come there's no wooden courts on the atp tour?

Seriously? Someone answer this question. I feel its a legimate question. Can someone dumb it down for me? I think wooden courts would be fine. The balls would bounce fine. so whats the problem?

they could have a few 250 events played on wooden courts, to add some variety to the season.
