West Australian Brydan Klein today lifted his second ITF singles trophy, winning the Mildura Grand International. After taking the first set 6-1 from Nathan Healey (NSW), Healey was forced to withdraw from the match with a knee injury.

Klein, the 2007 Australian Open Junior Champion, won his first senior ITF singles title on clay in New South Wales in October last year, adding to his two international doubles titles, Traralgon, Victoria, and Ilkley, Great Britain.

“It was disappointing Nathan had to withdraw,” Klein said of his match today, “but I was playing really well in the first set. I’m very happy with the win. I’ve played well all week, didn’t drop a set, surprised myself with how well I played, consistently putting good games together.

“I had a great start to the year at the AO and Sydney. Even though I didn’t win rounds it was a good learning curve. This is my first tournament this year where I’m seeking ranking points, so it’s been a perfect start so far.

“Next week I’m heading to Berri (SA), which is on grass as well, so I’ll hopefully try and repeat this week, one match at a time. Then I go to Thailand for a couple of Futures and back to Perth again. I haven’t played a Future in my hometown before, so I’ll try and do well.

“I have a four week training block after Perth to build me up for the next big block of tournaments. I’ll be working with the AIS in Canberra, with the fitness coaches, tennis coaches, Milo (Bradley, former Perth National Academy head coach, now AIS coach) and a couple of the other players – (Andrew) Coehlo and (Sam) Groth will be there as well.

“It’s been great being part of the AIS Pro Tour program. It really helps to travel as part of a team, with other players, mates, physios and coaches. It definitely makes me feel more comfortable at tournaments.

“My ranking at the moment is around 620 and this win should boost me up nearly inside the top 500, just a few points away. My original goal for the year was to get inside the top 300 which I think is pretty achievable, and I’ll just keep trying to build and finish higher,” Klein said.

Top seeded New Zealander Marina Erakovic defeated China’s Kai-Chen Chang 6-3 6-1 to take out the women’s singles title.

In doubles, played last night, Nathan Healey and Sam Groth (VIC) defeated Brydan Klein and Andrew Coelho (VIC) 6-3 6-4; and in the women’s doubles Erakovic (NZL) teamed with New South Wales’ Nicole Kriz to defeat top seeds Monique Adamczak (NSW) and Christina Wheeler (VIC) 6-4 6-4.

Tennis Australia’s Manager – Tournaments and Competitions, Cameron Pearson, was delighted with the success of the inaugural Mildura Grand International. “This is the first tournament in our three year contract with the Sunraysia region and we expect this prestigious event to be even bigger and better next year.

“The support from our sponsors, the Quality Hotel Mildura Grand, the Mildura City Council and the Sunraysia Daily, the Mildura Lawn Tennis Club which has provided us with world class facilities, and the people of Mildura, has been spectacular.

“All have enjoyed the week of top quality international tennis, culminating in a crowd of more than 800 who turned out for the finals today.
“The reaction of the players, both local and international, has been fantastic. They have been singing the praises of the standard of the courts here in Mildura and are looking forward to returning next year.”
