Here is a short match report from my friend Di who was at Nottingham yesterday. Thanks for letting me post it here Di
"Marin came through his match brilliantly. At first he couldn't get any returns in, he had a lot of difficulty with anything that came low to him, especially on his double-handed backhand, but when he was in a rally he timed the ball well. Every key point though, Mathieu came up with good shots, specially serves and forehands.
In the second set, he began to serve a lot better, but is very reluctant to go the net, he was passed on his only foray. Then mid set he started to come to terms with low balls, and really lived with the ball, and defended well. He started using the drop shot a bit, Mathieu then lapsed into errors. Crucially in the 10th game he double faulted on penultimate point. Marin made a great return to force an error from Mathieu, set to Cilic.
And the pattern continued in the 3rd set, Marins service improved further, he was in virtually every point, hitting the ball beautifully forcing Mathieu wide a lot. In the end Mathieu was worn down by the accuracy and power that Marin had in every department.
I met him afterwards, I told him what a great comeback he had made, and he thanked me smiling shyly"
