Convincing start for Frank. Makes you wish he could just stay healthy. Will be exciting to have him, Peter, Milos and Bester all back soon.

Managed to make it a little hard for himself from 5*-3 40-0, Clement got back to deuce, but holds on for the win

Wolmarans up next, Frank definitely the favourite to me.

When I saw he went from 63 53 *400 to deuce, I was expecting another choke... Faces big serving South African next.

A while ago we were enjoined not to discuss Frank's personal life, which I didn't understand as I hadn't noticed we had been discussing any part of his personal life.

But now I see that there is a personal issue that we can refrain from discussing: http://blogs.montrealgazette.com/201...n-the-qualies/

This might explain at least why he is playing this fall in Europe, although not the clay part.

I posted this in the qualifying thread. Bottom line - Frank played very well, overcame bad calls and late nerves and was the clear better player. Serve was on, forehand solid as usual, some fantastic backhand winners. I hope he keeps it up

A few iPhone pics to follow.

Dancevic vs. Clement - The only match I watched start to finish. Frank played very well. He was on top of Clement from the start - was holding easy and had deuce on Arnaud's first three service games. Had 6 break points in those games where on the first five he missed five backhand returns in a row without putting the ball in play. Was starting to get frustrated. Then Arnaud gave him a gift, double faulting on the 6th but Frank played a loose service game to get back to 3-3. That game was the turning point of the match. Frank had already been screwed over by the umpire the game before, and it happened again at 30-15 to Clement. Clement hit a ball literally two feet out but the umpire gave the point to Arnaud. The next point, Frank ripped a frustration forehand that hit the line. After that, his level rose considerably. He broke Arnaud twice in a row to win the set 6-3, and then held very easily in the 2nd set while breaking Clement with several fantastic passing shots and forehand winners. At 5-3 serving, he went up 40-0 with some good play again, and then... well Frank historical inability to close came back almost. He double faulted twice to get back to 40-30 then missed an easy backhand for deuce. Fortunately for him, after a couple more misses Clement missed badly on a weak second serve, and then Frank closed in out with a great rally. Overall, Frank will be very happy with this performance, needs to improve the return game against Wolmarans though. Clement on the other hand should be ashamed - his first serve was non-existent, his attitude on the court was poor, and he was pushing like a Spanish clay courter.

Just to follow up on what I wrote yesterday - I was really impressed with the way Frank was composed in the match - he appeared to really believe throughout he was going to win.

The scoreline looks like a one-sided affair, but the first set in particular could have gone either way. On his first five break points, Frank missed five backhand returns in a row - couldn't even put one in play. After finally breaking and then being broken back quickly, he stayed composed. At 30-15 as I mentioned at 3-3 the umpire called a ball in that was literally two feet behind the baseline. Frank went crazy and the crowd was booing. Next point Frank ripped a ridiculous frustration forehand that brought him back to 40-30 and then played three very solid points to get the break. From that point until 5-3 in the third, Frank was in control. As you saw on the scoreboard though, Frank didn't make anything easy on himself after going up 40-0. Two double faults followed by an easy backhand miss. He hit a couple of service winners to get additional match points but had another two easy misses. Finally Clement missed an easy second serve return and Frank closed it out.

Overall a strong performance but the return of serve needs to improve against Wolmarans. But considering the tight match it might be, its good to see Frank looking confident

it would just be great to see him carry this through to the main draw

twice this year we've seen him cruise through qualifying only to go down in the main draw even with winnable first rounds
