Sign up is far in advance and IW qualies NEVER looked even close to this bad. Frank isnt exatly Mr. Reliable either when he has to play daily matches at this level.

Futures and challengers are much easier points. Either he goes back to top 100 this way and gains some direct entries or he never will again
Actually a lot of players had already pulled out when Frank did, so yes they did look bad at the time. He's not reliable at CH/Futures level, well then he's got serious problems if that's the case.

You must be following a different player than the rest of us if you are just noticing this.

Frank signs up late, takes a wildcard away from a young player and then pulls out. Beauty.

Watched quite of bit of his matches on streaming and he's progressing as you'd expect where he missed over two months and had the abdominal injury. He's not ready to compete on clay with anyone in the top 500 who can play on clay - I can't see him winning first round qualies at the French, though he still has three weeks to build up stamina. He should be coming back into form for grass and, at that point and for the summer, the time off he had might work out to his benefit.

Not bad - took out G Melzer on the har tru, and gets a Challenger semi. Has an early start against Young tomorrow - can't see him recovering physically to have much of a chance, but it's house money for this tourney

And he beats Young to make another CH final ... saving all 8 BPs he faced. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Horrible start against Ginepri... just satisfied to be in final? He needs to get this - he'll be ranked really close to direct entry for Wimbledon where 115 might get you in the MD with clay courters skipping it

Three matches within 24 hours and he won two, just getting back into a playing rhythm after the time off - this is great to see. I think, now, he can qualify for the French.

A week off, Heibronn Challenger (2) on clay, then French Open qualies.

Got a great draw for RG qualies. Needs it of course to have any chance. Guessing he'll get thru first two rounds (though not necessarily comfortably) then meet maybe Starace (again - had to beat him in to qualify for Aussie Open). (Why didn't Starace play qualies for Rome as a WC? Maybe injured?)

Looking at his playing record, Velotti has just played once in a tourney this year on clay, the rest on hard courts. He played a lot on clay last year but lost a lot of first round matches (he did win one challenger on clay though). Frank will still need to play well (for him on clay) to win, do a little better still for the next match and be lucky overall to qualify.
