bad draw, heat beat Gulbis this week more than his opponent did, so we'll probably need sth. like 86 °F to get Thomaz into 2nd round

He has the game for hardcourts.

I can see him defeating Gulbis, but it's not going to be easy.
It will be a three setter anyway, I think.

he sure does, but still careerwise he will not even come close to his achievements on clay in the end, good serve is surely his biggest weapon on HC, some parallels to Almagro, apart from not being a total prick of course

Yeah, I have no idea why he hasn't done as well on hardcourts.
His game suits the surface, and his serve helps.

I think he'll have more success on hard in the future. He just needs to build up his results and gain more confidence on it.
