And the clean-shaven David scores a 6-1 6-1 7-6 victory over Robert Smeets today. Guess the back is holding up just fine. Next up: the winner of the Zabaleta-Luczak matchup.

He won 6-1 6-1 7-6.
Solid performance all round. Solid from the baseline however as the tournament goes on he has to serve better. He lost his concentration at the start of the third and was broken after a series of errors but got it together in time. In commentary, Wilander who now commentates for Eurosport said he spoke to David and he said he had recovered from his back injury.

The outcome was predictable, though I didn't expect such a thrashing in the first two sets.
In the third set, David made his life difficult without any obvious reason. The thing I didn't like was the fact that he was broken by a player named Robert Smeets. It seems a bit worrying.

I watched the first two sets then switched over 'cause I got bored, then I came back to watch a little bit at the end. Played well enough I thought, although he wasn't tested much.

That's not worrying, that's Dave. We all know he gets bored when he plays against guys that he knows he can beat even if he had to do it on one leg. From what I've read, Smeets sucks and so Nalby probably lost his concentration in the third. What matters most is that his back held up and that he won without to much effort. I like that in early rounds. Vamos!

Well done to David for a solid victory. There is no need to play spectacularly in the opening rounds. All that matters is winning with expending too much energy and progressing to the next round.
He will face the local Melbournian Luczak in the 2nd round. I do like Peter, and am looking forward to that match, but obviously I want David to win that match as comfortably as he can.

I saw the first two sets then went to bed because I assumed he wouldn't/couldn't lose anymore. Still I had an hard time falling asleep, you know, IT IS DAVID after all.

it's a solid win, but not a real test to his current form. But it's a win, yeah, so don't think I can complain.

just keep going Dahveed & focus!

I was there during the match and David played very well during the first two sets. Third set the local crowd finally started encouraging the Aussie and Smeets responded by actually playing a decent couple of games. Smeets hit a couple really great shots and David did a couple of errors and there's the breakback. Still no-one expected a fourth set. Smeets practically committed an error every single time David gave him a ball with a shoulder-high ball bounce.

The only stressful event was when a trainer was called to come out. I was hoping and praying it wasn't David who needed treatment. When the trainer walked past David to see Smeets, my breathed a HUGE sigh of relief. I took pics so will post it in a few mins or so.

Oh what's so funny is that I sat next to around 10 of last year's ball boys. A couple of them said that David is really rude and is very impatient if they're too slow. I saw David today smash 3 balls sideways when one ball kid kept giving him a ball when he asked for a towel. Anyway, the ball kids were still cheering him on - even though they thought he was rude and he was playing an Australian. Quite an impression he made with just his tennis, isn't it?

Thanks for the report bailarina.

At this stage a win's a win. And I'm glad he came through in relative ease.

thanks 4 the story, bailarina

i never seen him being rude
maybe ball-kids were too sensitive?, Dave won vs. their "local matador"?
or he was too tired/sensitive because of the same reasons?

Thanks for the info and looking forward to the pictures!

And about David being rude, well... I recall a match, which David lost and didn't shake his hand with the umpire after it, I think it was the match against Ljubicic in Miami/Indian Wells, can't remember now.
