I wish more fuel alternatives could be developed. We were talking about the hydrogen car in school when I was 14; now, it's a possibility. Why does it take so long to get a hybrid car. Ethanol shows a lot of promise especially since the US is a grain nation. Why is it not available? If we could establish a more regular use of fuel alternatives, we wouldn't have to be at the mercy of OPEC.

Ethanol is available right now. Virtually every car on the road today can use E-10 gasoline, and in most large states, you're buying it whether you know it or not. Look at the pump the next time you buy gas, and you'll probably see an E-10 sticker. |

ethanol is not a solution, we can never grown enough corn to fuel all the cars. its a short term answer but not the solution.

Not in Louisiana. Our coastal towns thrive on refineries and would do anything to keep fuel alternatives out of the state.

You can't put E-85 into an unmodified engine now, although you can use E-10. But the point is that ethanol fuels are available in your state.  |

Is E-10 safe for a 97 Mazda 626 that's on its last year? How much cheaper is it that gasoline?

Yes. ANY car can use E-10 (including my old 95 Saturn). It's not cheaper than any other gallon of gas, as it's simply indistinguisable from regular gas. You don't buy it at a special pump. The goal of E-10 is to use fewer barrels of oil over the same level of gasoline consumed. And in most states, it's required to be used because of air pollution levels. And, of course, the corn farmers love E-10.

its a law in most states to use E10, it should say on the pump

What do you mean ''waste''? If a German drives 200 miles to see his family is that OK? But in a much larger country, if an American drives 400 miles to see his family, is that ''waste''?

Hybrid cars can run on electricity as well. I was out in California not too long ago and there were several people who can get 120 miles to a gallon of gas for their cars. They could plug it in at night and let it charge up the battery.
Basically, when you are in the city, it uses electricity to power the car, kinda like a golf cart, and it only uses gas on the highways.
But the problem was the car looks like a piece of shit. If we can get a good-looking stylish car that can get 120 mpg, why not?
