Someone on Roger's website posted this tidbit about his on-court interview after the Ginepri match:
However, yesterday he just really asked Roger how he was feeling to be back on court and Roger said he felt he had played well altho he could have played better and that he enjoyed being back in Madrid and hoped to do well again this year... Then they had a bit of a giggle because apparently the night before Roger+Mirka, Tommy Haas+girlfriend and Carlos Moya were all having dinner at a very famous restaurant in Madrid (Casa Lucio) then Alex arrived and Roger couldn't get over the fact that at 9pm there was absolutely NOBODY THERE!!! He said that in Switzerland or US it would normally have been full at that time... so they pulled his leg about eating early and getting enough sleep when here in Spain people eat late and enjoy themselves until late into the night... But Roger was very happy because he'd managed to get Carlos Moya to pay the bill for dinner - I think there's a joke amongst the players about Carlos (not) paying for things!!! And that was all really.
I know it's petty but damn that bagel tasted so sweet
On a more serious note I think Roger's back to being Roger not just because of the great play but the mental side :
-he's been extremly solid lately serving as clutch as ever
-playing the big points as well as anyone else in the game
-Going on ninja mode against player that have dared to beat him
I have yet to see this match but when I eventually put the livescores on in the office, must admit I was a bit shocked to see the scoreline of 6-0 5-3. A savage revenge - no wonder the ATP headline is "Roger's Wrath"!
It looked similar to the beatdowns Hewitt used to get whenever he referred (in pre match interviews) to his DC comeback from 2 sets down against Fed.
i loved that. Hewitt always used to bring it up pre-match and derive confidence from that match. Always got smashed right after.
Anyways, this shows imo what happens when federer plays without outside interference. No wind, sun etc. The conditions stay relatively constant and fed gets in a groove and decimates other players.
When federer plays outside in conditions that can be variable, he tends to be conservative in his play. Think to cincy and usopen where he was passive and wasnt feeling the conditions too well.
right now, federer is far and away the best indoors, and his level indicates that he could be among the best of all time indoors if he plays like this.
There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers.
