He went to tiebreak against a player ranked 422? In the first set? Not good.

He had almost 2-months break with wrist injury and started training only last week so he's not in top shape.
And he lost to Wesley Whitehouse, No 582 or smth in Indy last year.

Safin, Davydenko advance to second round of Kremlin Cup

MOSCOW -- Marat Safin struggled to beat Russian qualifier Denis Matsukevitch 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 Tuesday and advance to the second round of the Kremlin Cup.The 28th-ranked Safin, who only recently returned from a hiking trip in Nepal, was playing as a wild card.

"I thought he would be scared".Safin said. "But he wasn't and dragged me to a tiebreaker in the first set."
Also, top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 and will next face Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, who rallied to beat Fabrice Santoro of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. On the women's side, eighth-seeded Nicole Vaidisova struggled to beat Russian qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Matsukevitch, ranked 422nd, was playing in his first ATP Tour event. He broke Safin in the fourth game of the second set, but Safin broke back immediately and again in the 11th game.

Safin played after cutting short his trip to climb Cho-Oyu, the world's sixth-highest mountain.

"At least I've done something I wanted to do all my life," Safin said. "But next time I have a chance, I'll try to be more prepared."

I'm sure you'll change your mind. A victory pays off for all the stress and the nerves you've lost over him. Have fun!

Not many comments on the actual match...? Was Marat very rusty...very bad????? Looking forward to Annie's and others' reports from the tournament. I'm not very encouraged so far - I realise he's had a break climbing (part of a} mountain but I'm extra discouraged by the comments about his wrist continuing to feature in his post-match comments. Can't see him going very far in the tournament - his ranking is already down to c35 and will fall further if he doesn't defend his Final points. Oh no! I was all positive after seeing his happy face at the Kremlin Cup press conference but perhaps I'll feel better after his outstanding performance in the next round!
I live in hope?!

I hate when that happens. Getting dragged into a tie break.

Silly Marat, you play like and oaf the intimidation factor goes away.

[quote=mer;6114379] he didn't say anything about the wrist

You're right! I misread the Reuters article in the news/articles thread here and thought it was Safin talking about his wrist but it was Davydenko. Phew! Sorry to spread confusion!
