Remember the Roddick one a few years back? The press was having a field day when Roddick won and thought that this would be repeated at the Australian Open. The press was asking Federer if he was concerned, and he said it was just an exo.
Also, I recall a TV program about Federer's life and I recall his childhood opponents saying that when he is playing practice matches, he did not mind losing and would take it lightly. When it was time for a "real" match he was totally different player and would never let any of his peers beat him.
Just my 2 cents.

federer has a reputation for being a poor practice player. he has lost to everyone...even to guys like lapentti.

Re: Federer - Sampras meet again after 6 years - Official page for their match in Mac
What's the purpose of this exhibition, anyway?
Personally, I couldn't care less and I wish Federer would find something better to do, lol. It's an exhibition, for crying out loud, and unless I was a huge tennis fan in Macao and heard these two legends were coming to my hometown I really wouldn't care because it's meaningless.
IMO, Roger should be concentrating on his own career and aspirations, and Pete should try to fade away gracefully. I thought winning the 2001 USO was graceful enough.
Geez, why won't he just go away?
Sorry, I know there are huge Pete fans around here but I'm getting tired of hearing about him, especially at this juncture. Roger really needs to focus on himself; he still has an active career and a lot left to accomplish.
Please, Pete, stop distracting Roger.

Agree. Fed has nothing to gain in this spectacle, except for money. Also, I can't stand serious discussions about meaningless exhibitions provided by MTF experts with impressive armchair knowledge.

That's another thing that Roger and Pete have in common -- they're both known to be poor practice players. So in this exhibition, it might boil down to who plays less poorly.

Lighten up. It's only for fun (and money). Federer won't play at full strength and it's after the season anyway. It won't hurt Roger's performances in 2008.

Federer - Sampras meet again after 6 years - Official page for their match in Macao
Sampras v Federer Exhibitions on Tennis Channel
October 3, 2007
The November Tennis Channel line-up will include live showings of the three meetings in the Asian exhibition tour featuring current world No. 1 Roger Federer against former No. 1 Pete Sampras.
According to the Tennis Channel schedule, the meeting in Seoul, Korea between the Swiss and the American is up first, shown Nov. 19 at 4 a.m. live (EST). Up next is the Nov. 22 match in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at 7 a.m. live; then the Nov. 23 meeting in Macao, China, at 1 a.m. live.
"I am so excited to play Pete and I am really looking forward to visiting Malaysia for the first time," Federer said. "There is no doubt that we will play some great tennis."
The exhibitions originated after Sampras invited Federer to practice at his home in Los Angeles last March.
"Obviously he's a great player, but I felt like I didn't embarrass myself out there," Sampras said of the practice session. "I feel like I can hold my own."
Sampras gives himself a chance against the Swiss, who beat him in their lone tour meeting at Wimbledon in 2001.
"Roger's game doesn't have many cracks," Sampras said. "It's one of those sorts of match-ups where I just need to overwhelm him with some power and try to come in and hopefully serve well."
Sampras has won all three events he has competed in this year on the Outback Champions Series senior tour in the U.S.
"I want to do something every two or three months," Sampras said. "I'd rather not play enough than play too much."

He’s such a pure, class act. In other words, he’s humble. Yet he does not need to be.

Re: Federer - Sampras meet again after 6 years - Official page for their match in Mac
This is actually a bit tricky for Roger. He must not lose this, since even if it's just an exhibition, idiots will start saying that he cannot be the greatest if he can't beat an over-the-hill Sampras. On the other hand, it IS an exhibition, so he must not hive Sampras a schooling either.
So in some ways this is a lose-lose situation for Roger, while it's a win-win situation for Pete. Anything but a complete humiliation will be a good result for Sampras, and since it's an exhibition, a complete humuliation is basically out of the question.

i dont think roger really cares for idiots. Idiots will think of something new even if federer does win easily.
If what you say is true, fed has only himself to blame if he does indeed lose.
