I would love to see a video of Andy imitating Novak's ball bouncing

This is funny. And we thought Andy was bad for eating at Taco Smell

Good thing Ronald McDonald didn't get his revenge the next day.

Here's something funny I came across:

Somebody get Andy Roddick a beer already
September 09, 2007

After yet another loss to the seemingly invincible Roger Federer in the U.S. Open Quarterfinals, Andy Roddick will have some time to regroup before his next tourney. Judging from these quotes, ol' boy needs a keg. Call me, Andy. I'll have a beer with ya.

From Bob Larsen's Tennis News:
What did Jimmy [Connors] say to you straight after the game?
ANDY RODDICK: He gave me a beer.

From the New York Times (about what he'd be doing if he wasn't playing tennis)
"I'd probably be in my eighth year of college, trying to qualify for my third Beer Olympiad."

"I'm more in the mood for a beer than a chat right now" (after his loss to Federer at Wimbledon)

"We'd practice, he'd come home, kick his feet up on my couch, have a beer." (about training with Jimmy Connors)

(From Tennis-X):
Andy Roddick enjoyed a beer after his match in the locker room Wednesday night to celebrate his birthday

(From The Austinist, about playing James Blake):
"Once we get on the court we wanna rip each other's heads off, but then we're able to go get a beer afterwards; so it's a good mix."

(From Scotsman.com Sport):
"I just need a beer."
Roger drives Andy to drink.

From the Palm Beach Post:
Quote:
Commentary: Magic is working for Roddick
By Charles Elmore
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
September 04, 2007

NEW YORK — Forget mojo.

Andy Roddick is winning with voodoo.

Even the best players in the world can't stop that.

A mystery malady afflicting No. 9 Tomas Berdych on Monday helped propel No. 5 Roddick to the U.S. Open quarterfinals, to face No. 1 Roger Federer, who beat unseeded Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

Berdych said he awoke with no problems to start the day, had trouble breathing from the start of the match, and eventually felt too lousy to continue, retiring with Roddick ahead 7-6 (6), 2-0.

For the second time in three rounds, Roddick moved on with the aid of an opponent's mid-match pullout.

"I don't know exactly what was wrong," Berdych said. "It was like hard to breathe. I didn't feel well. Then the body was so slow. It wasn't any like straight one problem or one pain or something. So it was just like generally didn't feel well."

Berdych consulted a doctor, who ordered blood tests.

Roddick ought to become a host on a mystery-diagnosis show, the way opponents are dropping right and left. Two rounds earlier, Jose Acasuso won a set from Roddick before coming up lame.

This time, a top-10 player suddenly couldn't move and couldn't catch his breath.

"Unfortunately for Tomas, that's not the way you want to go out," Roddick said. "But there's not much I can do about it."

It wasn't exactly a confidence boost for Roddick that Berdych took him 14 points into a tiebreaker while staggering around like the undead victim of a New Orleans curse. Then again, wounded foes often go for their shots with nothing to lose, and Roddick got the result he wanted.

"There's a big sense of relief to get through that first set because I could tell he was laboring a little bit," Roddick said. "The difference between winning the first set and losing the first set as far as his mentality is huge. But as far as him throwing it in when he did, I felt like I was in control either way."

Physically, the result is clearly a break for Roddick, who practiced for another 45 minutes after the abbreviated, hourlong match. Just don't ask whether it helps his state of mind.

"You could say I could be fresh mentally or maybe I haven't been freaking out enough over the past two weeks," Roddick said. "I don't know. You guys can run with that any way you want. It's kind of out of my hands. I'm going to kind of focus on the task at hand."

Earning another chance to test himself against No. 1 Federer, the opportunity Roddick blew one match too soon at Wimbledon, has been his all-consuming purpose at the U.S. Open. He lost to Federer in last year's U.S. Open final in four sets, and again in straight sets in the semifinals of January's Australian Open, marking his 13th loss in 14 tries against the world's greatest player.

"I'm excited," Roddick said. "I expect a lot of myself. I don't think anybody else really expects much from me."

That produced some chuckles in the interview room. As long as he remains a top-10 player, Roddick, the 2003 Open winner, cannot escape the burden of expectations that he should be a final-weekend player here.

This time, Roddick carries U.S. men's hopes by himself heading into the final eight. James Blake's five-set boogeyman made a return visit Monday in an entertaining but ultimately devastating loss to Tommy Haas. Blake led two sets to one and had three match points before falling in a fifth-set tiebreaker.

Haas, whose shoulder problems made him doubtful before this tournament, has clearly resisted any voodoo aimed his way.

Something is helping Roddick. Maybe it's coach Jimmy Connors' advice for where to hit approach shots before coming to net. Roddick won 7 of 10 net approaches against Berdych. Maybe Jimbo is working feverishly behind the scenes with chicken heads, a doll and pins.

Roddick insists he knows nothing about why his opponents can't stay on their feet. He's glad to get off his own feet for a while in a tournament very important for his career.

"I don't know if it does too much good to worry about it because it's out of my hands," Roddick said.

"I know that this is a lot better than being dead tired. Given the two options, I'll take this one."

More.

Last Berdych batch.

Roddick def Berdych 7-6(6), 2-0 ret

From the NY Sun:
Quote:
Andy Roddick will take a crack at Federer first. The American has lost nine consecutive matches to Federer and 13 of their 14, but he never seems to tire of the challenge, which is a lot more than one might say of Tomas Berdych, Roddick's opponent yesterday. The 6-foot-5-inch Czech has ferocious ground strokes but a timid heart; he retired early in the second set yesterday because he felt ill and had trouble breathing, though nothing stopped him from earning a set point in the first set tiebreaker. Berdych's coach, Jaroslav Navratil, who had not spoken to Berdych at the time of this interview, was miffed.

"I'm not happy because he has good chance, because he's playing well and likes to play [ Roddick's] game," Navratil said. "There's no pressure. All the pressure was on Roddick."

Berdych has disappointed so much of late that it's hard to understand how he defeated Federer in the 2004 Olympics. He has never beaten a top 10 player at a Grand Slam tournament, and though he is just 21 years old, it's easy to see him headed for disappointment for years to come, rather than major titles. When asked if he was worried about that, Navratil said, "For sure."

"Not too many chances," he said. "Especially when you feel good and have good form."

Hm. It looks like the Djoker is already inside Roger's head. Roger has 2 df's already and he's won only four points off Nole's serve.

*edit*
And now he's just broken Roger and will serve for set

*edit*
Wow. What a choke by Nole serving for the set. Roger lucks out again.

Quote:
ESPN CHAT WITH BONNIE FORD AND GREG GARBER, SEPT 6

Matthew (Omaha): Maybe I missed something....I watched the match last night and never once did I get the feeling that Andy was going to win. He only had one break point the entire match! I know he played hard, but if one break point is the best he can play then he will never have a shot to beat Federer.

Bonnie D. Ford: Matthew, whenever a set goes to a tiebreak and a big server is involved, that player has put himself in a position to win. The tiebreaks were 5 and 4 -- and if either had gone the other way, the match could -- and I emphasize COULD -- have gone differently.

Var (Boston): Roddick's awkward movement kills him against Federer. Unlikely he'll be able to overcome that disadvantage in an important match.

Bonnie D. Ford: Var, who doesn't have a disadvantage against Federer? he makes everyone look helpless at some point or another. I thought Andy covered the court well last night.

Adi (Toronto): I developed so much respect for both Jelena and Andy last night. They fought valiantly, and were very gracious in defeat. Jelena's defence was amazing and her joyful personality was on full display! On to my question - how on earth was Roger able to return Andy's 146 mph serve? that was completely unbelievable!

Greg Garber: Well done, Adi. What people in the gam will tell you is that Roddick's serve, while huge, is sometimes predictable. Federer hits the ball 15-20 mph softer, yet guess who had more aces last night, 15-14? Yes, Federer. It's like pitching; placement and changing speeds is just as important as having the big fastball.

Rohan (Bombay, India): Hi. I watched Roddick v/s Federer and thought that Andy played realy well. Only on a few points , he went to Fed's forehand and got passed at the net. I definitely think that if he keeps attacking fed's backhand and goes to the net, he has a shot at winning for sure. What do you think? What is the future of Roddick and Connors' relationship from here on? Thanks for doing a great job.

Bonnie D. Ford: Another country heard from. Thanks for weighing in, Rohan. Several people have suggested that hitting high topspin shots to Roger's backhand is one of the few ways a player has to make him uncomfortable. Easier said than done, but I'm sure guys will keep trying to probe for weaknesses in his game.

Var (Boston): Roddick getting matchpoints against Fed in Shanghai does not prove he can beat Fed. All it proves is he can compete with him if Fed is having an off day. Andy has no chance against Federer in a slam, but might score a win in a lesser tournament if Federer is off his game.

Keith Hawkins: Beating Federer in a best of five outside of clay has been virtually impossible since 2005. Yes Fed does have to have a down day and Roddick has to have his A-game going...and yes a best of three would be the best place to knock off Federer.

jason (canada): After the French Open, there has been a lot of talk about how the "Federer intimidation" factor has decreased? Do you think that its back now? I think it is. I think its back because 2 of the biggest servers in the game (Isner & Roddick) brought their best heat - Fed took 1 or 2 sets to figure them out, and then dismantled them with cold precision. At the same time, both Agassi and McEnroe spent over 2 hours gushing about how amazing he is. Its scary, but in less than a week, we've gone back to conceding the title to the mighty Fed.

Keith Hawkins: I think if Djoker is in the final he might get caught up more in the moment than Darth Federer. He's played him enough to know his game -- but he hasn't played him on this stage for a Slam final. Ferrer has been playing his best tennis and I just wonder how much gas he would have left in the tank. Fed intimidates some but Roddick tradeded punches with him for two sets.

Kathleen (NY,NY): The crowd seems very blah about the matches. What's your take? Personally, I found Roger hard to root for. Too slick, too put together, too European (in a way that makes Roger seem a little soft). I guess I like more macho athletes. Oh well!

Greg Garber: Kathleen: You're not the first to make that observation; Mary Carillo just referenced how quiet the crowd was. The fact is, Federer is so good, he drains most matches of their color and competitiveness. The man bag probably doesn't help his cool Euro image, but he is an artist. I'll take substance over macho style -- but that's just me. My wife would probably side with you.
