The fact that Roger had to play well is also testament to Andy's level of play.

And although the Wimbledon 04 final was closer by scoreline (as i think he pointed about in the press conference), i think this match was much better. Andy really was thinking about how he was approaching the points. He wasn't just blindly hitting hard, he was varying shots. Good viewing

awwwwwwwwww! If what you guys say about Andy not getting negative and believing in himself throughout and playing well all at the same time is true (and I see no reason why you would lie! ), then I am very proud. The fact that he didn't give up makes me happy because I really hate it when he does that! Obviously it's disappointing that he lost but it's a step in the right direction, an if he can just sort his head out against other players too then next year they won't meet so early. I hate the fact that Roger can be playing so crappy yet as soon as it is Andy on the other side of the net he brings out his A-game! (although that is why he is number 1 and I think it says a lot about Andy because maybe he feels like he has to play better than against others?!) I wish I could've seen the match!

onto DC...

Let's put it like this:

I'd rather Andy play a high quality tennis match like yesterday (where he gave it his all) with Roger playing really well and losing in straight sets than both not playing their best and Andy managing to win a set due to a shitty display from Roger.

Yep.

This whole match, other then the losing part, there isn't much to be really upset about.

I agree that it was a match that had to be seen, to really appreciate what we are say about his performance last night. Even when he lost the tiebreakers he still kept his focus and never seemed to be down on himself. He made Roger work for every point. If he can now keep this momentum going, good things may happen. I can actually say it was a good match to watch, even with him losing.

And I hate to be the reminder of bad news, but he was a LOT closer last year to beating him and it didn't seem to do him a bit of good considering what happened the next time they played

Anyway, he better win DC, because it's the only thing that would salvage a year that has somehow turned out to be even worse than last year
Tough, but it's a bit untrue. Andy played the best I have seen him play in years last night. Years...sure he's had glimses, that match against Baghy was really nice, the match against Roger in Shanghai was good, and even the Johannson match was encouraging. This was far and away the best I have seen him play, he came out guns blazing, Andre said "engage primary weapon" and he did, proving to me that Andy still has the best serve in the world. He would have beaten anyone tonight except for Roger, and really could have easily had Roger 2 sets to love.

It's encouraging as a fan, it's very encouraging. I haven't seen Andy hit the ball like that since 04' Wimbledon. Andy's a champion, he's proved time and time again. Last night he played the way he had to and didn't back down. He was unlucky was all, the points didn't go his way at crucial moments. If he learns from this match, remembers it, and plays this way again there is no doubt in my mind he can win another major(s) playing this style. He can beat anyone...yes even Roger(with some luck).

The year isn't over Deb, there are a couple more indoor masters that Andy could grab, a few of which Roger doesn't even bother playing. He started well last year until he rolled his ankle during that indoor season. Then of course the cup is coming up too, where he can yet again pickup more points. All is not lost in Roddick in fact, matches like these are stepping stones. Lets hope Andy steps forward.

I've said my piece, but to close, for three years I was asking Andy to remind me why I am his fan, he reminded me last night and every other Roddick fan who saw the match...he's a guy with the heart of a champion. Is there any other more endearing quality?

I really don't agree that that was the best Andy had ever played but I do agree that Andy's serve the whole night was brilliant. Players would kill to have a serve like Andy's (I don't think he df'd once the whole match ) To hit with that kind of power consistently and not df is astounding. People who moan about how boring serving at a high % is don't know anything about tennis. Winning with your serve is as crucial to the game as winning with a volley.

Still, I wish Andy would take my advice and try throwing in a 88mph melon once in a while.

Well it's good to hear that, for once, he served well against Roger. Usually he presses too hard and misses too many and DFs a lot.

Ryan, I'm not questioning how he played; I didn't see it so I have no place to do that - you guys say he played well, I am glad about that - still disappointing, but better than the pussy show he put on at the AO - at least he proved that that was an anomaly and that he just mentally did not show up that day and that they really are closer than that, so that's good.

My point is simply that I think that it was the occasion, night match at the USO - his favorite place to be - that helped him raise his level. I have really serious doubts as to whether he will use this as a springing board to give this much effort and to play at this level all the time. I could live with him losing to Roger a lot if he would play like this all the time because he'd beat probably everyone else. But he doesn't. And that's why I'm so skeptical. Believe me, I'd love to be proven wrong - but it's happened so many times before, where he's played a good match and either won or lost, but hasn't used it as a springboard to keep going. It's not being negative or mean or whatever, it's going by what's happened in the past. Save for 2005 USO, which we will just forget, Andy gives his best effort at the USO and at Davis Cup. His desire to win, and his even more intense desire not to lose - at these two events - is palpable. It's why I'm a fan, and it's why it's so frustrating to see him not bring that energy all the time; he'd just be so much more successful if he could do it and because we KNOW he can do it, it's disappointing.

wow lots of great words, analysis and other stuff but let's move on now DC is coming up and I for one can't wait. We all thought that James was the weakest link in April but he stepped up and won both his matches. I think when it comes to crunch time and the onus these 4 guys put into playing for their country that this is their year. I can't wait for DC either - the US throw one hell of a party, Tangerine knows what I mean!!!!
