Safin beat Isner 6-3 6-4 in the 1st round at L.A.
Have to say it has surprised me an considerable amount that Isner has made no progress this year. In fact, it appears he has regressed somewhat. I never expected him to be a top ten player or major champion. Top 40 or 50 however, yes.
Quite a disappointing season on his part.

last week, John played in the Us Open, where he lost in the first round against Andreas Beck, of Germany. The result was: 6-7(5)/4-6/6-7(3).
He played doubles too, he and Sam Querrey lost at the first round against Calleri (ARG) / Gonzalez (CHI) for 4-6/5-7.

It just struck me that exactly one year ago, after only two months on the Pro tour, Isner was ranked 144th -- exactly the same he is now. 
A very disappointing year for him.
