- in the first set Muster broke Sampras in the opening game. He was leading 5-3, at 5-4 he was serving for the set (he wasted two set points at 5-4 40-15) and Sampras broke back.
- Sampras wasted three set points (leading 6-3) in the first set tiebreaker and lost five points in a row!
- In the second set Sampras was leading 5-1(!), but Muster broke back to 5-5. He had even 6-5 (30-30), but Sampras took the 2nd set in another tiebreaker.
- In the third set Muster was leading 2-0!

P.Sampras - I.Lendl 6-4 7-6(4) 3-6 4-6 6-2

- Sampras served 24 aces and had 27 service winners!
- "It`s disappointing, but it had to end sooner or later. It just happened to end today" - Lendl said about his ended era at Flushing Meadows.
- This match lasted 4 hours and 5 minutes!
- In the second set Lendl was serving for the set at 5-4!
- In the second set Lendl wasted four break points and mini-set points at 5-5!
- Sampras wasted three set points at 6-5 (on Lendl serve) in the second set, but won 7-4 in the tiebreaker on the fifth occasion!
- In the fourth set Lendl was leading 4-0, but Sampras didn`t surrender. He broke Lendl once. Sampras even had 40-15 on Lendl serve at 4-5, but Lendl finally took this game and set.
