Default Re: Federer vs Nadal & Djokovic ranking points (updated after Estoril)

UPDATED after Estoril (fifth grand slam)
After two shaky wins and the straight sets loss to Montanes in the semifinal at Estoril, we have to face the fact that Roger hasn't played this badly since his terrible summer of 2002.

Here are the overall ranking points:

Overall 52-week ranking points
1. Roger Federer: 10430 points
2. Novak Djokovic: 6765 points
3. Rafael Nadal: 6480 points

Here are the points with Madrid and RG from last year removed:

1. Roger Federer: 7430 points
2. Novak Djokovic: 6065 points
3. Rafael Nadal: 5700 points

Surely we can expect Nadal to win Madrid and RG which puts him at 8700 points. Federer then has to gain more than 1270 points to beat the Sampras record. He could do this by reaching the RG final (1200 points) and winning a match at Madrid (90 points). If he reaches the SF of RG (720 points) he'd have to reach the final of Madrid (600 points). Nothing less will do.

Djokovic is no longer a realistic threat since he isn't playing Madrid.

These are the points broken down:

I'm no longer expecting him to get the record after RG, but I suppose it's worth mentioning if the gap is very narrow, were he to do better than Rafa in Halle/Queens then he could potentially get that extra week.

Yes, if he loses in the first round of Madrid, but still makes the RG final, then he'll only trail Nadal by a few points which he could potentially make up at Halle.

Sounds like a pretty tough deal to me!
Anyway, without hope, all's lost. Best of luck, Rodge.

Say Roger loses in the first round of Madrid, yet makes the final of RG where he faces Nadal. The winner of that match is #1 after RG. Who do you cheer for?

Still with Roger being five years older than Rafa, and taking into account that he's - 1. in the Fall of his career right now (and sadly enough, I happen to believe that he's in decline since 2007 ), and - 2. him being a daddy right now and perhaps having to concentrate on other things than tennis alone right now - it might well be obvious that I want him to hang around as long as possible, so please let Roger do well in Madrid and RG.
Draw your own conclusions eh?

Rafa has Time on his Side, and if he doesn't f*ck *p with his schedule like he did before, many fantastic years to follow. No better Dauphine to Roger's legacy than him, bash me if you like for me saying this.

Possibly, plus I'm not sure Rafa (assuming he makes the final of RG which is almost like 99% gonna happen) I'm not entirely sure he'll go & play Queens right after that. I mean yes it's clay & grass which are better for the knees than hard court but I'm just not sure I can see him risking it if, as you would expect him to, he has thoughts of making RG final & Wimby final. I mean it'd be 2 weeks of however much clay court grind followed quickly by Queens, which assuming he'd play in order to get time on grass would mean he'd want to do well so that's more days playing followed almost immediately by Wimby which would be yet another 2 weeks on his knees. Not that I know anything about his physical levels & what his knees are like but if he's dropping out of his favourite tournies on clay (Barcelona) because he doesn't want to risk his knees then I don't really see him risking them inbetween 2 slams, especially if he also does well in Madrid...I dunno I just think he might not play Queens if he wins RG. Not that the lack of Queens points will mean much anyway if Rafa's just won RG!

Meh, I'm hoping Roger gets the record obviously but I'm not like sat here expecting him to, that way I won't be too disppointed if it doesn't work out. Plus who knows, it's not like the count resets if he drops down the ranking, he might find a way to climb back up to #1 again later & get the record at a later date.

UPDATED after Rome
After a horrid start to the clay season, Roger finally found some of his form and recorded good wins over the likes of Gulbis, Wawrinka and Ferrer, before succombing to old foe Rafa Nadal in the final. By reaching the final Roger scored some much needed ranking points, although the total for his overall ranking was negative as he was the defending champion. Now Roger needs a semifinal at RG to secure that he equals the Sampras record of most weeks at #1.

Here are the overall ranking points:

Overall 52-week ranking points
1. Roger Federer: 10030 points
2. Rafael Nadal: 6880 points

Default Re: Federer vs Nadal & Djokovic ranking points (updated after TMS Romel)

Theoretically, Nole is still in the race.

If Djokovic won RG, he will be at 8315 points which means that Federer must reach QF to be at 8390 points.
If Nadal won RG, he will be at 8700 points which means that Federer must reach SF to be at 8750 points.

Another note :
If Federer lost in the first round he will be at 8040 points.
The maximum points for Nadal if he didn't won the title ( to be the runner-up ) is 7900.
And for Nole : 7515 points.

So, If neither Nadal nor Djokovic won the title, Federer will continue at #1 after RG even if he lost in the first round !
