I like that idea. Even if he would not win AO next year, he would have a room to gain the points there.

Let's not forget the risk of injuries. Roger has been exceptionally injury-free over the last few years. Even a small injury at a bad time to easily cost him the #1 ranking.

With Roger having decided not to defend his 225 points at Halle, this unfortunately makes the gap narrower and Nadals lead for 2007 bigger (given that Nadal actually plays Queens).

Federer is scheduled to play only 3 optionals this year. I have a feeling that if he wants to keep #1, he will have to add some optionals.

I think keeping the #1 ranking will be difficult this year unless Nadal has another post Wimbledon slump, which I don't expect. Especially if Nadal does play one or two clay tournaments after Wimbledon. Nadal is getting closer, Federer can't afford to lose early in any of the TMS after Wimbledon

I dare say that he would, excluding any kind of injury.

Losing the 1# to Rafa is going to hurt Roger more than losing 3 RG combined, it's way too early for that. At the begining of the year, it looked insane! Seriously, I don't want to hear about Rafa taking 1# away from Roger until 2009, at least!

I think so too, and I trust Rogi that he'll try and do anything to prevent losing the #1 position this year.

I disagree. Fed already has the record for consecutive weeks as #1 so that is no longer important. He should be fine as long as he is #1 by the end of the year. That is all that matters.

225 with Nadal defending 55 points in Queens. He has to get to the semis if he hopes to gain more of a lead.

Hopefully Federer decides to play in Los Angeles this summer so I can watch him play but I'm not holding my breath.

If he loses it, it will probably be by year's end anyway.

Roger has about 2,000 point lead over Nadal now but that is mainly from USOpen, Toronto, and Madrid. If Nadal has a slump or does worse at Wimby this year it will help.....but I don't think we can count on that happening at all. (He has virtually no hardcourt points to defend).

Nadal beat Roddick and Djokovic on a fast hardcourt at IW this year, so that's going to give him confidence that he can beat anyone on fast courts. Plus with Roger having lost some points, Nadal will be energized thinking that the year end #1 could be accessible this year.

If Roger were in his best condition he'd have a great chance with the rest of the year......but what about all this talk of his injury? If there is an injury then that makes it much tougher for Roger to defend his points.

Furthermore, I think that skipping Halle is going to hurt Roger at Wimbledon because he won't have match play practice under his belt. I know he was either injured or thought he could get injured.....so he felt he had to skip. I am just saying heads up everyone......Wimbledon is no forgone conclusion.

I hope we don't get extra pressure for Roger with reporter hype about him matching Borg's 5 Wimbledon's in a row streak. Roger has to stop letting media put him under pressure.

If Roger loses #1 from Indiset Point Ranking at any time that would be a big deal because there's no guarantee he would be able to gain enough points to regain #1 by year end. That would depend on how far behind Roger would get. Nadal knows that and Nadal has very little to defend after Wimbledon so he can make huge gains.
