Without the better defence Djokovic wasn't anything like as big a threat to Federer.

Furthermore, AO '07 was Federer hitting his peak and it was not easy to predict he would not keep that level up whereas actually he has declined a fair bit (though he is still a great player) since then. Djokovic defence is similar to Hewitt's not Nadal's and Federer already showed that when on form he eats up that play with ease, obviously he is not quite that player anymore. He is more vulnerable and Djokovic is a very good player indeed.
Indeed, it is hard to see a player without great defensive skills, beating Federer. That's why players who rely solely on hard hitting rarely beating Federer. I agree that Djokovic's defense is somewhat similar to Hewitt's, but his attacking play is far better than Hewitt's, which is a key here. It's tough to beat Federer simply by keeping the ball in play. Nadal has given Federer so much trouble by keeping the ball in play AND attacking his weakness.

Terribly bad news that Roger lost to Murray, but let's not despair yet. Roger's #1 ranking is still only theoretically in danger after Miami. Let's see how Nadal does in Dubai.

Given that Roger must have lost 300 points in Dubai is his ranking really safe for a while?

Am I missing something because after this loss I would think Roger's points go down to 6030...putting him just 175 ahead of Nadal. If Nadal makes it to the Final he'd get 210 points, and if he wins he'd get 300 points ....enough to overtake Roger.

Although I don't follow why it is when I look at their point breakdowns I don't see Dubai added in at all.

He cannot lose it at Dubai or at IW but it will be in danger at Miami. Even though he can't lose it at IW it would be fairly disastrous to perform badly there just because good results need to start coming if Roger is to build a foundation from which to push toward being the best in the world this year. So far he certainly hasn't been.

I agree with that. I am confused though how it is Roger is safe until Miami. Will losing Dubai cost Roger 300 points?

As far as I know... With losing Dubai Roger lost 300 points, he has now 6330 points.

If Nadal wins Dubai, he will win 225 points and have 6205 points.

Roger has only 5 points to defend in IW and Nadal has 500 (winner last year). Even if Roger doesn't get any points and Nadal wins, Roger is still at the top.

And then, Nadal can take over at Miami.

Whatever. The one that manages to get the most points, is the one that truly deserves that #1 spot.

Do note that I didn't mention any names here, okay?

Very true, barring another disastrous draw at Indian Wells, I am assuming he'l at least make the quarters in palm springs. He shouldn't get that horrendous of a draw at a much bigger event like Indian Wells? Or one would hope. . Besides he better have some major motivation going on, this loss should spark him to show again who's the boss or at least in the mean time.

Updated after Rogers loss to Murray.

Basically it comes down to this: Nadal would have to more or less clean up at Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami, while Federer does next to nothing for Nadal to overtake the #1 ranking before the clay season. More is explained in the first post in the thread.

Okay. Thanks for these updates, they make it easy for me to understand

So this is crunch time coming up. we've all said "blah blah no.1 spot is being threatened" the next month will tell us a lot. Miami is where Roger has got to step up to it.

i dont care about weither nadal wins dubai just to keep roger in the number one spot
i just care about roger to get back on track and to gain his own style again, cause it really hurts when i see him helpless like this....

Fed can't really do any worse at IW/Miami than he did last year. He should be OK for a bit.

However it's his game that he needs to find right now, not points.
