ROMANIA
President victorious in impeachment vote
BUCHAREST - Romania's President Traian Basescu easily survived a referendum on his impeachment Saturday with at least 75 percent of the vote for him, according to exit polls showing a victory that he said reflected the popularity of his fight against corruption.

Five parties in parliament banded together last month to suspend Basescu, saying he violated the constitution by usurping the role of the prime minister and criticizing the courts.

Basescu, a staunch U.S. ally who won the presidency in 2004, is credited with helping to implement reforms that helped Romania join the EU on Jan. 1.

ROMANIA

President rejects parliament vote

President Traian Basescu said he would not resign, a day after the opposition-dominated parliament suspended him amid allegations that he had abused his position.

The parliament vote paved the way for a referendum to impeach Basescu, to be held on or before May 20, Senate Chairman Nicolae Vacaroiu took over as interim president.

Basescu is unlikely to be removed from office. A majority of Romanians of voting age would need to support impeachment in the referendum, which was considered nearly impossible given his popularity and the normally low election turnouts.

The situation in Romania with the feud between the President and Prime Minister had to come to a head sooner or later and now hopefully the country can swiftly move forward with a new President and meet the required European Union demanded reforms which can only benefit the country.

Vacaroiu you mean Miru

I do agree with you though that he is NOT the man to take the country forward for obvious reasons

Well he was born in the Soviet Union of course In Ukraine actually

Yes but Basescu is a very lazy president and it surely will of no use to your country especially after the failures evident there since the fall of Communism.

Communism often works well at first as Orwell always pointed out

I'm not surprised it eventually collapsed in Romania though considering the way it was forced on the country by the Soviet Union after WW2. I guess there was little they could do though considering the might of USSR

I was always under the impression that Basescu has been more above board compared to the 4 years of Nastase's rule as PM?

Russia-URSS always put presure on us,so did the austrohungarian empire. we've always been at the crossroad.

u mean Basescu did more as president than Nastase did as PM? yeah probablly,we'll never know how much did Basescu steal but Nastase just smuggled some pains and works of art and constructed some castles in Cornu and also got a few milion bucks

Yep that's true - as with every revolution, the initial few years/stages are always great for the people, everyone is in harmony, but the new regime only starts to make changes the public dislike when they have their feet firmly under the table. In Romania I doubt the people ever really wanted Communism especially considering they allied with Nazi Germany but it was either that or the probability of being wiped out by the Soviet Union.

Nastase was responsible for Romania's entry to NATO though which was a positive step for the country and to be fair during his term the economy did stabilise to a certain extent. I guess it was also during his term that the EU accession treaty was completed so he certainly had the country's best interests at heart and was very pro-active.

I agree with you about the corruption though He never quite managed to prevent it but to be fair it was only towards the end of his term as PM that he *allegedly* became actively involved in them. A good man in all but sadly he let himself down.

oh come oooooooooooooooooooon not again!!!
[rant]

1. Vacaroiu won't lead the country, he's just there till the referendum is over, so it's not about how much of a leader he is.

2. He can't drink cos he has diabetes.

3. Basescu won't leave cos not enough ppl will show up to validate the referendum.

4. Any person following Romanian politics (and here I don't mean the ones who accidentally watch the news once in a while) know exactly what Basescu is doing wrong and why his popularity is decreasing. And mind you, he has done something incredible: made PRM (right-wing extremists a.k.a Hungarian haters) vote the same thing with UDMR (the Hungarian party), an absolutely unbelievable thing, given the hatred between the 2 parties. So it was not like the ppl in the Parliament woke up one day and thought 'oh, why don't we suspend the president?'. PSD gave it a try and they succeeded. Who would've thought?

5. What kind of a person proudly states that he'll resign after 5 friggin minutes and then comes back to say ' actually I'm staying cos it's better for my people.'

[/rant]

Basescu is not lazy What can a guy do with the Parliament and The Prime Minister don't support him??

We asked him not to quit!!! If he would have done so, the parliament with it's interim President would have voted a law that would've stated that a President who had resigned, cannot be a candidate anymore....so Basescu would have been out of the run for President, which would have been the worst thing since uhm....communism So he didn't resign

And seriously now...can you tell me the name of one guy who would do a better job/care about the people and what is in their best interest beside Basescu?? Nastase.... Gusa Vadim Becali Ponta That pretty much leaves us with Basescu...cause Stolojan doesn't want to run for President...And the reason Basescu has been suspended is the same one for which they totally made Mona Musca look like Romania's worst enemy(...and for what?! For something that the majority of the Politicians have done in the past??? And are still doing maybe!!! ) and for the same reason that they had Monica Macovei step down: because they were finally revealing the cheats and liers who supposedly look after our best interests and all they care about is how big their wallets are, because they were sooo close to starting the war against corruption and that would have jeopardized the positions of hundreds of Politicians and Business Men....this country is never gonna pull through if they don't let a decent President do his job...

Macovei is another fave of mine you're right about Musca, she was unfairly treated. But Macovei: she was part of a government. If she disagreed with what the PM a.k.a her boss said, she should've resigned. There have been 3 people who have done this so far: Ionut Popescu, Mircea Miclea and Andrei Marga. They disagreed with the PM, they left. Not the end of the world. Tho Marga was a huge loss (see other ministers of Education: Abramburica , Athanasiu :retard: , Hardau ) So I was very happy to see her go away. It's the only reason why I dislike her so much. Her desperation to stick to her chair. Save the Justice? Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah right

Basescu is trying to be a 'player president' but he gets over his attributes. He should keep his nose/ass out of the Government, Parliament and Justice Court's business because they simply aren't among his attributes. Perhaps being a PM would've suited him better, but he fooled Stolo not to run for Pres so he could (health problems )
now he has to follow the rules of being a president. Oh and about Stolo, that meeting in Piata Universitatii made me feel sick. WTF was Stolo doing there???? campanie electorala pura

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand he's not the saintest of the saints. the 'Flota' case was abandoned because he came to power. Nastase was an angel during the PSD rule, so is Basescu right now. It always happens

you are right that there is no-one decent to run for President right now. But I was questioning his honor. You said something, you do it, even if it is to your disadvantage. He should've kept his mouth shut and then everything would've been ok. he's lost quite a few fans after this thingy (not me, he's lost me aaaaaaaaaages ago)
