Since Melzer and Marach have their own thread, it's time for Koubek to have one.
It seems Stefan's decision to skip the Davis Cup playoff to get his ranking back in the top 100 has been successful. After defeating Ancic and making the semis in Mumbai, he has done well in his home event of Vienna is in the quarters defeating Baghdatis and now plays Hrbaty for a place in the semi finals.
I think I get it now. My question is will his ranking drop because he did not reach the finals this week? He was up to 50 in the rankings.
I agree that Peya will most likely not get to play unless it is a dead match. The Austrians stick with Stefan no matter whether he is playing well or not. If they gave the younger players a chance, they would have experience and I feel Austria would do better. At times both Marach and Peya have been playing well and they did not get a chance to play for their country.
What upsets me is the fact that the one time Stefan was not chosen to play singles because his ranking had dropped so low, he chose to play in a tournament to help his ranking and was not there to support his team and country. I am sure you feel this is fine, but I think it shows the type of person he is. Always thinking of himself first.
He is ranked 71 at the moment, but that isn't too important.

So if Stefan is playing well, then he shouldn't play, cause they need to give younger players a chance? If he is in form, then he should be picked, if not, then he shouldn't.

So what should he have gone to the Mexican tie and been head cheerleader or something? Here is the thing you complain about him playing a tournament in the week when he wasn't selected for the team. He wasn't playing well enough to be there and these players have to look after their rankings as well, there is a balance there, especially since Stef is not a top player.
If he was injured and couldn't play then it would be the perfect time to go there and support them and actually that challenger result helped him move back up the rankings. Actually it doesn't show anything about him as a person at all.
Disappointing effort from Stefan against Chucho. This was hard for me as I wanted Argentina to win the tie, but Koubek to play well. One part of that happened and the other didn't sadly.
Acasuso didn't face any break points in the first set, but served poorly in the tiebreaker and Koubek had 2 set points and couldn't convert on either.
Chucho broke early and held the momentum to give his team the 1-0 lead. After a tough set, it became easier for Chucho who served well, but had some help from El Fashionista with 44 unforced errors.
Koubek retired in Valencia in the 2nd Round against Volandri 4:6,0:1 due to injury - left foot. hopefully nothing serious. probably he withdraws from monte carlo.
Stefan must be very happy with that win over Querry. Sam just could not serve yesterday so was at a great disadvantage against Stefan who gets everything back and places them well. I wish Stefan luck, but I also like Llorda so it is a probllem for me. Play great Stefan and you should win.
Anyway, Stef won easily again and you never know what can happen with him and he has played Blake once before and won that match in 5 and I remember it clearly. He can do it again and a good result here will keep him in the top 100 for a year.
I am a fan of all Austrian players and have been for many years.
I do hope Stefan continues to play well at the Open. After the match last night Blake will be very tired dand Stefan does have a good chance to win.
At Indian Wells, I spoke to Stefan and wished him well. I wanted him to beat Spadea, but it ws not to be. Stefan did not play well that day and I was so disappointed. Now I hope he turns it around and plays well against Blake. If they both play their best it will be a great match to watch. I am sure we should get to see it here in the states on TV.
Stef got what we wanted a night match on centre court and he said in his diary while he is satisfied with the performances against Querrey and Llodra, he knows he will have to increase the level of his play.
Stef blew a huge opportunity against Blake or one could say he murdered the match. Up 4-2 in the 1st set and loses 6-4, wins the 2nd and then serves for the 3rd at 5-4 and loses to love and led in the breaker.
Good that he made the 3rd round, but what a shit ending.
Actually I thouoght he played hard and was just up against a better player.
I have seen Stefan play at least six times and this was the first time he impressed
me with his effort.
Watching him lose to Andy Murray in Memphis and Spadea at Indian Wells had me
doubting his abilitly to play well. Last night he put out a lot of effort in
running down shots and then making winners. I was glad to see him finally
truly trying to win. At one point the announcres said "He looks like he really
thinks he can win". That is when James turned it around and started to play
better.
Give Stefan credit for giving his all out on the court. He certainly fell
enough in trying to get to balls and that split made me hurt, yet he bounced
right up from it and still played well. I bet he is sore today.

I have followed Koubek for years and years and I think I can back my judgement on this match, that it was an opportunity blown by him. It's the 3rd round of the US Open and not some MM event, so of course he is going to try to win it.
Koubek blew lots of chances to win this in 3 sets and the last set was one as soon as Blake won the breaker. Best thing that Koubek did was soften up Blake for Haas to finish him.
