Saramago is the Paulo Coelho of those who like to think of themselves as the True World Elite, the self-proclaimed leftist intelligentsia, mostly a vulgar bunch of pretentious morons without a clue of the real world.
"Antes, na criação do Universo, Deus não fez nada. Depois, decidiu criar o Universo, não se sabe porquê, nem para quê. Fê-lo em seis dias, apenas seis dias. Descansou ao sétimo. Até hoje! Nunca mais fez nada!"
Overrated? Not a bit! He was genious... and he had opinions which he wanted to convey but not force them. he is not close to being my favourite portuguese writer, but he was trully genious.
He had a motive to bash Portugal, as his own country wasn't necessarily fair nor kind to him. This goes way back, way before the Nobel: the Sousa Lara days, that many here, seem to have forgotten.
But come to think of it, if I had to chose between Lanzarote and Lisbon to spend the rest of my days, I mean, I wouldn't give it much thought either.
Why on Earth should Portugal "be kind to him"? what does that even mean in the first place  he was free to live where he wanted, Im not one to bash anyone for his choice of place but his endless platitude about oh-how-bad-"my country"-treats-me was tiresome and divesque. What the hell, what should have "his country" done? what DID HE DO for his country? all he was interested was in licking his friend dictators asses (what a moral icon, FFS, an apologist of a bloody communist monster like Castro) and cultivating his own overinflated ego.
Oh pls. don't get me started, let the man rest in peace, I say again.
And yes, this is a free forum and no one is gonna dictate anyone what to say and where if it is within the site rules, thank you.
Oh yes, and I rather Lisbon than Lanzarote like 1000 million times, I'd die of boredom in Lanzarote after two weeks.
