Unofficial Live ATP Rankings [in Post #1]

By request from a few members to create a separate from Judio's thread with updated rankings, I will start this thread for frequent unofficial live ATP rankings. I will have a small break sometime in the future, but I will return afterwards, so don't worry if there will be a small interruption in the near future.

Now, one advantage to a new thread is that I can explain the color code and display mode for the table.

- The table displays current ranking standings by calculating the number of points dropped at the end of the period mentioned on the head table (the next official ATP rankings date).
- The Drop column details the number of points for all the tournaments that will be taken out of the player's rankings. Multiple tournaments may be dropped for each player, but the tournament with the most points dropped will determine the color of the drop points. For instance, 180 Wimbledon dropped along with 45 ATP 250 in the week after Wimbledon will result in 225 colored in red (Grand Slam color).
- The Gain column displays the total number of points the player has raised at the current tournament.
- The Effective column is the exact number of points the player will win or lose at the next official ranking. The total here is calculated based on all tournaments dropped and all tournaments played (GS qualies, Futures and all other tournaments that will be counted at the next official rankings). The color is determined again by the tournament with most points.
- The second Points column is for the next week after the current week. When no Grand Slam is being played, all current Futures tournaments are first counted there, since they won't be part of the rankings until a week later. Also, all next week's qualifiers will be counted there.
- In all weeks an additional Incoming Futures column is being displayed, along with the total tournament count calculated in advance so that the players with the same number of points are separated properly.
- During Grand Slam qualies another column with the points made there (not yet Live) is added. And during Grand Slams, another column with the points from the tournament is added in case a player goes to another tournament after the GS or GS qualies, but before the next official rankings.
- In the detailed week by week part of the table, you will encounter -1 points for certain players. Those tournaments are actually the tournaments in which the player has received a 0-point penalty for retiring or for not completing at least 4 ATP 500 tournaments in a year.

The colors used as background inside the table mean:
Green - The player is currently not eliminated from the Main Draw.
Red - The player was eliminated from the Main Draw or Qualifying Draw.
Blue - The player is currently playing on the Qualifying Draw.
Orange - The player has retired from any match.
Gray - The player has withdrawn from the tournament, but will incur a 0-point penalty. This will be noted as a -1 in case of ATP 500 events, and 0 in case of ATP 1000. This is due to the fact that ATP 1000 events are recognized as Mandatory by the system, while ATP 500 events are not, and there needs to be a difference between regular 0 (first round loss) and mandatory 0 (penalty).
White - The player currently does not participate in a tournament.

The colors used for text inside the table mean:
Red - The player is/was on a Grand Slam Main Draw
Regular orange - The player is/was on a ATP 1000 Mandatory Masters Main Draw
Light orange - The player is/was on a ATP 1000 Optional (MC) Masters Main Draw
Maroon - The player is/was on the ATP Tour Finals Main Draw
Green - The player is/was on a ATP 500 Main Draw
Olive - The player is/was on the Olympics Main Draw
Purple - The player is/was on a ATP 250 Main Draw
Plum - The player is/was on the World Team Championships tournament
Sky Blue - The player participated in the Davis Cup
Teal - The player is/was on the ATP Challenger Finals
Blue - The player is/was on a Challenger Main Draw
Navy - The player is/was on a 15K Futures Main Draw
Black - The player is/was on a 10K Futures Main Draw
Gray - The player participates on the Qualifying Draw of any tournament
Silver - The player does not participate in a tournament

Djokovic will still be number 1 even if he doesn't win the Australian Open, unless Federer wins the Australian Open and Djokovic doesn't reach the semifinal there.

if he doesn't win the australian open, he will then most probably be a slamless number 1.

Besides, Murray can't be number 2 after the Australian open even if he wins it : the top-2 swill still be Fed-Djokovic. Murray could be number 3 with 2 slams and Djokovic number 1 with 0 slam, OMG how many bullshits would there be on MTF ?

Do we have to hope he wins the Australian Open to avoid another load of bullshits on MTF (as I felt happy he won tonight despite being a deep Fedfan) ? unfortunately maybe yes

the situation now after the Australian Open :

Djokovic 10920
Federer 9545
Murray 7030
Ferrer 6025
Nadal 5400 (yes Nadal will have to reach at least the semifinal and more probably the final to stay number 4)
Berdych 4245
Del Potro 4120
Tsonga 3195
Tipsarevic 2840

During the whole year, Djokovic got a number of ATP points quite near to what he got in 2011 (12920 to 13630 with the current ranking system, 7095 to 7135 with the ancient ranking system) and higher to what Nadal got in 2008 and 2010 ... rather similar to what Federer got in 2007 (7180 in the old ranking system), and only really surpassed by the 8370 points Fed got in 2006. In 2004 and 2005 Fed had a little bit less points (6725 in 2005) but he missed Masters 1000 tournaments, he missed 4 ones in 2005 because of injury especially (yes I know many people think that Fed has never been injured  ).

Djokovic had less good results in slams and did not have the huge streak he had in the beginning of 2011 but he had never been as consistent during the whole year, he had no bad period at all this year, which is the first time it happened for him.

Federer got a number of ATP points similar to what he had in 2009, with less spectacular results in slams but better in Masters 1000 tournaments and ATP500 tournaments. Murray got a little bit more points than in previous years, thanks to his US Open win especially.

Here's, for a comparison, the number of ATP points players got during the whole calendar year with the ranking system which prevailed during 2000 to 2008 (ranked according to their current rankings) :

Besides, looking at the stats in the "ATP Ricoh matchfacts", Djokovic also has quite near stats to what he performed in 2011 : 87% service games won (86% in 2011), 35% return games won (39% in 2011), especially if you focus on hardcourts : 89% service games won (85% in 2011), 37% return games won (41% in 2011).

Federer had one of his best serving years (only 2004 is similar), especially on second serve (61% points won on hardcourts, better than the previous best 2003 and 2005 with 60%), but came back to his return stats from 2008-2009, which had improved in 2010-2011 by working with Annacone. I think he focused more on tactical changes on his serve (especially second serve) for this year, the focus was more on return in the beginning of his work with Annacone.

Murray's Ricoh stats are not as good as you would think : his year is not statistically better than in 2011, and 2009 was clearly better for that. What's been interesting with Murray along the years is that he has tried to improve both his first serve % and his second serve : he seems to have indeed improved but the efficiency of his first serve has quite declined, and in the end he has not really improved his overall efficiency on serve. On return, he's not been as effective as in 2011 (31% return games won comparing to 36% in 2011, 32% to 37% on hardcourts).

Nadal's Ricoh stats were very good this year ... until he got injured.

#800 ·
Djokovic was clearly better on points on HC also this year than 2011, wasn't he? His post-US Open 2011 campaign hurt his numbers.

Federer's 60% 2nd serves won (all surfaces) is in fact a new personal best for him. He got 59% in most of his glory years (2003, 2005-7). 60% is also the single highest figure ever achieved by anyone since Ricoh stats started in 1991. The record was set by Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003), tied twice by Nadal (2008+2010) and now by Federer.

Murray's stats not being better should not surprise anyone. After all, he didn't win more matches or tournaments this year than previous years, he just got his wins in better places.

Nadal's stats are of course helped by the fact that clay was a larger part of his season than usual. His stats tend to deteriorate post-Wimbledon.

It seems like there are like a lot of tennis fans who know their stuff on here, so I guess this is quite a basic question, so can anyone inform me as to whether Ferrer can overtake Nadal so as to be seeded 4 at The Aus Open? The rankings are quite confusing, particularly with regard to countable/non countable tournaments for a player.

What scenarios could see Ferrer overtake Nadal before the seedings are listed for The Aus Open?

Thanks.

#803 ·
There is only one scenario, but it's highly unlikely to happen. There's 365 points between them.

Coming into the AO pre-week (when seeds are chosen), Nadal has 90 points to defend, Ferrer 75 (from Davis Cup final).

If Nadal doesn't play, and Ferrer wins the first tournament of the year and both matches in the Davis Cup Final (both being live matches), he gains 325 more points, while Nadal loses 90. Their points become:

Nadal - 6705
Ferrer - 6755

This is the only scenario.

#814 ·
It's because of this:

3 DANIEL, Taro JPNT
. DANIEL

when you copy the pdf from the tournament. This is quite a majestic crap error from the tournament organizers, from which there is no escape.

I like it how when things are perfect and okay, nothing is said for days in this thread, but when things go wrong, it's always "Why do... why didn't... when will...", like I am deliberately punishing a player or something.:D

#818 ·
DC scenarios:

1)In the unlikely event that Stepanek wins both his singles DC matches(both live), he will jump 8 spots to #29, and become a commitment player for next year.
2)If he wins one live rubber, he will become #31
3)If Almagro wins a live rubber, he will become #10 and Gasquet will be pushed to #11

No possible changes in doubles rankings

#819 ·

the commitment players for next year can't be changed anymore : they were decided by the rankings on the 5th of november.

Neither Stepanek in the Davis cup nor Bellucci in the challenger final can get there anymore even though they may enter the top-30 for the end of the calendar year.

#833 ·
A question:

This is on the FAQ on ATP site:
Q. What is the ranking structure and formula in 2012?

A. In November 2011, the ATP Board passed a rule to allow more flexibility in which tournaments count toward the ranking of a commitment player in 2012.

Commitment players (top 30 in 2011 year-end ranking) can count their best six (6) results from ATP World Tour 500, ATP World Tour 250 and other events (Challengers, Futures, Davis Cup, Olympics) toward their ranking. To count their best six (6), players must have fulfilled their commitment to 500 events - 4 total per year (at least 1 after the US Open).

So is this structure a permanent change or just a change for 2012 to accommodate the Olympics? Anyone knows?

#852 ·
Yeah, I think after this week since it will be just Futures until next season maybe you should do the top 500 to get more Futures action in, at least until next season.

#845 ·
Last night and this morning on the ATP website above the rankings display there was this note :

Rankings Note: The South African Airways ATP Rankings as of Monday, 19 November are the official year-end rankings.
that means the rankings after the DC final and before Tyumen and Toyota challengers.

I'm not exactly sure what it means and/or implies.

I wonder if it implies that the "Race for London 2013" will include the challengers of Tyumen, Toyota and the Challenger Tour Finals.

I think that the race for London restarted last week, that's what it was implying. I might be wrong, though.

So Nadal will lose 90 points from Doha and 1200 points from AO, leaving him at 5400.
This means that even if Ferrer loses in the first round at AO, he will become #4(unless Berdych wins AO) once the AO points are dropped(when will this happen? this change of schedule every year is getting on my nerves:mad:).

Nadal has enough points to stay at #5 unless Berdych reaches the AO final or DelPotro wins AO.

it will happen after the AO. Ferrer will be at worst number 4 (he can be number 3 if he reaches AO final and Murray doesn't reach QF) unless Berdych wins the Australian open and Chennai and Ferrer loses before QF, or Berdych wins the Australian open only and Ferrer loses before R16.

Hello my friends. Happy New Year's.

The problem you have noticed is caused by your friend, Microsoft Windows. After severe usage of the printscreen method that displays the context of an Excel chart inside a png image, the driver gets faulty, and it no longer uses RAM memory correctly. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to fix this, except restart the computer once in a while. You could have opened the xls and xlsx files to see the complete rankings if the images were corrupted.

Well this is sad news.

Did you try going back to doing just the top 400, instead of the top 800?

#882 ·
It's not that, it's the size of the image that contains the Top 400. I should decrease the count and post more images, 200 players per image. But I'm thinking of creating a website soon. But I don't really know much on that, so I think I'm gonna need help.:D
