I personally think that Shamasdin is an unproven player with an inflated ranking, but it's better to have him play doubles than to have Dancevic play three matches. In singles, I think Peliwo is just as good of a choice as Bester, Polansky, Diez or Schnur in these circumstances. It's an opportunity to play two important matches; maybe he'll be inspired. Canada needs to somehow force a fifth match, where all the pressure will be on Belgium.
Shamasdin was as high as 55 earlier this year (currently 61st) he does have an ATP title this year from Casablanca.

I think you're right about forcing the 5th match though as if I'm not mistaken that would be the battle of the #2's. So Goffin would have played first on Sunday, putting all the pressure on Bemelmens or Darcis.

Well I guess it's bye bye for Canada this year, but it's ok, as at least they don't have to play the roulette that is WG playoffs.

It's been made official now Shamasdin is in. So it's Dancevic and Peliwo for singles with Nestor/Shamasdin for doubles.

^ Look at this as experience for Peliwo, and perhaps a swan song for Dancevic.

I'm shocked Frank is playing here - his ranking has fallen outside what would be needed even to get into the US Open qualy drawm and I doubt he realistically stands a chance to beat Darcis, let alone Goffin. At his age, it would be crushing not to make it.

^ There is no one else ranked higher than Frank who is healthy and playing, so it's not shocking at all. He absolutely has a chance to beat Darcis, his form's been dire, he also has a history of winning DC matches.

Draw is out:

http://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-res...ieId=100022383

R1 - Darcis vs Dancevic
R2 - Goffin vs Peliwo
R3 - Bemelmans/Coppjeans vs Nestor/Shamasdin
R4 - Goffin vs Dancevic
R5 - Darcis vs Peliwo

Gonna be tough. 1-1 on day 1 would be nice.

Well Darcis takes the first match.

It was always going to be extremely tough to win without Raonic and Pospisil but it seems almost impossible now.

Let's see what Peliwo can do against Goffin.

I'm glad this tie is over. Now I can stop with the pointless hoping. Canada's traditional strength, the doubles, has become it's biggest weakness.

It's a pity they couldn't take advantage of this year's opportunity. With Switzerland losing early and Serbia defeated by Argentina, the stars seemed to be lining up for Canada. I can imagine a semifinal at home against Argentina with four tough singles matches and a good chance to win. I can also imagine a final at home, on an indoor court, against Great Britain. Raonic has a good record against Andy Murray and their #2 singles player is James Ward. We'll never know.

Canada's future Davis Cup success will depend on Raonic's and Pospisil's willingness to play. They may both need to play three matches. As for 2015, I think I'll cheer for Great Britain for the rest of the year. Andy Murray won two live matches against the US and two live matches so far against France. He has a good chance to take it all the way, against Kazakhstan and at home against Argentina.

I expected Frank to do better and maybe even win, disappointing.

They should have won the doubles to save the tie for 1 more day, couldn't even do that, all in all one of the worst DC performances from Canada in awhile.

When your highest ranked singles player is 272 instead of in the top 10, that can happen.

I agree. I don't think anyone should have expected us to win this tie.

Honestly, I'm just pleased to see Peliwo play well on a big stage and hopefully he can gain confidence going forward.

Oh c'mon, we all know Frank is better than 272, anyhow his match should have been closer, Darcis hasn't exactly been lighting it up for awhile, so the match was quite winnable.
