Yes, Beckis was there at the opening ceremony (made some photos of all of them), then he left and I haven´t seen him there most of the time on Friday. It was said that they draw water from his knee Friday morning and therefore Karol Kucera had to play, what he found out at noon.
Domino was his usual terrific self and won against the croatian serving machine on Friday and played great tennis against Ljubicic (who admitted later that he throw up after second set because of the pills against his kneck pain). U
nfortunately Beckis not being able to play made all the difference this weekend. Michal tried his best yeasterday, but he was never a singles player.
You would probably like the offical programm from the DC finals, there are lots of Beckis pics as kid, I like most the one where Mecir is teaching him to make a tie.
He looked very sad, that he couldn´t do anything about winning DC. I felt almost more sorry for him then Domino, who was giving his life and soul in order to win it.
I can´t scan the pictures, but will try to make a good photo of them and post them over Xsmas, way too busy now.
terrible draw, if the tie was in Bratislava, Slovakia would win easily.
well, now plays Macedonia or Belarus, might stay at Group I and next year can qualify to World Group 2011
Great time when there were Kucera and Hrbaty, now Hrbaty is about to retire and Beck is refusing to play in Davis Cup
So, how will be the Slovak Davis Cup team in a near future and in some years?
Some tallented young guys like Lacko, Klizan, Martin and Mecir Jr. hopefully will establish themselves as top 100-150 and seem a good prospect for the future. Polasek might be the "doubles especialist" player, role of Mertinak in last years.
Cervenak, Semjan and Capkovic may improve too and make the squad in next ties.
The Slovaks lost to Austria in March in Austria, 2-3, with Klizan and Lacko losing their matches to Melzer, and Melzer/Knowle defeating Mertinak/Polasek in 4 sets. They will now play an undetermined opponent to retain their place in Europe group 1 in September.
I thought that at least Martin Kližan could win his match against Querrey. Getting a point from the matches against Isner or Bryan brothers seemed much less probable.
