Andy Murray on clay. Will he ever win a clay title?
With all his moon balling and great tactician tennis, wouldn't his game translate well on clay? I don't understand why his results aren't so good on clay. I know he was injuried last year and didn't have a chance to play during the clay court season, but still...
Re: Andy Murray on clay. Will he ever win a clay title?
Andy could possibly win a clay 250, but he doesn't enter them so I voted No. I wish he could play better on clay, but I can't see this happening at this point in his career.
Time and time again we see the British #1 get pounded on clay. Its his least successful slam surface and he never looks comfortable out there. Is there a reason for his results on clay? When we look at him without the results he should be the clay goat:
- Great defending/ Pushing tendencies: obviously clay is a very slow surface and defenders should thrive here unfortunately for Murray he hasn't made a clay final much less thrived on the surface.
- Growing up on clay: Unlike some of the American men who haven't seen clay court until there mid 20's. Murray grew up playing on the surface at a fairly young age.

-_- i said it 1000 times already ..
You can't counterpunch on clay ... everyone who had played the game and have simple sence of tennis and has common logic knows this ... For instance: Simon , Hewitt ......
and last but not least Murray thrives on his opponents power ! and his swings are short and rely on timing ... THE END/FIN/KONEC ! Deal with it you low tennis IQ-ers

his main problem is his fh imo.then the lack of confidence on the surface and the inability to chose one strategy and apply it properly (it often looks like he can't decide if he needs to play agressive, defensive etc...)
Before we completely make him look like a scrub, it's not that strange his game doesn't work well on all surfaces. We've just been spoilt with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic and have expected every one to be able to do this.
A lot of the greats had a poor surface, and it's mostly been clay.
He did not grow up on clay, that's a misconception. He spent 2 years in Barcelona. He grew up on hard courts.
With his movement being one of his key strengths, he doesn't do well on clay, because he is unable to slide into his shots. His forehand is also not potent enough to hit through the court on a regular basis. Obviously, confidence goes a long way as well.

Poor movement in contrast with how he is on HCs/grass. Inability to generate many winners. Poor building of points and indecision about where to defend/attack (because his usual counter-punching isn't as effective).
Maria used to be a cow on clay, but in the last two years it's become her best surface, even winning RG in 2012 - and she has a very good chance of defending it this year.
I don't see why Andy can't get better, his potential is way too good not to win a RG.

Murray simply has no excuses for getting his ass kicked on clay day and day out. He's probably top 50 on clay. Even a guy like Isner is arguably better on clay than Murray and god knows when he started playing on the surface.

This list has him at #18. Or #16, depending on which time period you look at. Probably inflated somewhat due to his seeding, but still.
