Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

:yeah:

From all articles I read Arno wants first speak with the players before making his staff. He's different with Forget even if they have the same values.
The staff and of course the coach is important so I'm wondering who it will be

Some videos of Arno's reactions

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

I was on work travel these last past days but when I got a message from l'equipe on my iPhone yesterday "Coupe Davis: Clément capitaine", I was like :bounce::bigclap:

I'm very very very happy, and in the same time, I can't believe I'm going to see Arnaud on the chair next to the players in a few months, it is soooo weird !!! Will he do like Forget, always standing up a front of the player and doing his famous oversplits ? lol
Well, it's just so amazing, he won't have to stop working just after wimbledon, he already has a new job !
It's great to know everybody voted for him, it's a good thing.
Now, I wonder since when he knows the news (RG, Kezzi ??), who he will choose to help him (co-trainer) etc... maybe he won't change anything. I think he needs experienced guys to help him in his work.
So many stuff to think about, it won't be easy to take Forget's place. Bonne chance Arnaud !!! ;)

Equipe today

Google will help us soon

Peut-on dire que le système a vraiment changé ? Non.

» – F. Ra.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

i'm still excited :hearts: it's hard to believe. i thought it's just the media who wanted him lol

but who knows, with such perfect timing, one would be forgiven to think that they had been waiting until he finally decided to retire. within days, the organisations gave him the captaincy. it's like he had been the 'chosen one' all along. at least in the last few months.

i still think that escude was the one whom they had been trying to groom for the job. pioline's hopes were high for only a little while.

i'll read more reports when i go to google translation :p

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Yes and we don't why Excude has been exluded by players  while last october in first media polls in was the leader with Seb. Pioline that was the opposite of Arno indeed. Someone with not affect with the players to take decisions but players have choosen Arno at the end. We have the reactions of all the 6 players except Monfils who refused to answer to journalists about his withdrawals in Wimbledon so the DC Captain was not his interest this year. Arno has a contract of 2 years.

I tried to improve a little bit the google translation of the main article :
Monday, Arnaud Clement lost his last matc as pro singles in qualifying at Wimbledon. Yesterday, he was inducted into the Davis Cup captain. Holy week!

SINCE THAT GUY FORGET had discussed the idea of his departure last November, many candidates had expressed interest like Henri Leconte to Amelie Mauresmo through Nicolas Escude, Cedric Pioline and Sebastien Grosjean. And that's Arnaud Clement, but without bandana wearing T-shirt and black jeans , with ease, which was installed yesterday in the large conference room at Roland Garros as a new Davis Cup captain.

Smiling, but sweating. Natural, but not quite casual. "What I was tense! "Admit it after the press conference, the first act of his new life. Not easy to be captain, even when one has been chosen unanimously. But so gratifying, though: "For me, it's fantastic, and at the same time a great responsibility. The big difference is that before when I was failing, I was failing for myself. There, I became team leader of France's second national sport. "It could have been a young retiree. The idea he "liked it a lot." But he can no longer hide. "Now the goal is to win the Davis Cup ... "

HOW IT WAS DECIDED?

These are the players of the hard core of the Davis Cup in recent years (Tsonga, Simon, Monfils, Gasquet, Llodra and Benneteau), which have decided. But certainly easily. Rather, after many discussions in recent months. "They saw themself hours and hours. There were a lot of thoughts, some have even written things, says Arnaud Di Pasquale, head of male high-level . This is at the third joint meeting it was determined. "" It was a conscious choice, confirms Gilles Simon (7 selections). Upon discussion, Arnaud appeared to us as the captain thought to be best able to lead us to victory. "" It's Cedric Pioline who has the more challenged Arnaud Clement in the end, "says Gilbert Ysern, heads of FFT. "It has not been played by much, but in the end, it was unanimous, says Michael Llodra, double pillar of French for nearly ten years with 25 selections! The players liked that Arnaud's perhaps that it does not position himself too early, because he was still active and whether more of us who went to him ... Talk together between players was super rewarding, we have really delivered. These are the values of Arnaud man who made the difference more than his qualities as a tennis player. "

WHAT IT WILL CHANGE?

He says he will do neither of Noah neither of Forget, but it will be what, do Clement? Yesterday, even himself did not know exactly. The new captain just acknowledges having "many thoughts", without saying more about the details. "There will not break, anyway. Guy (Forget) has much in common, but characters that are not identical. Then it will necessarily be different. "

After the elimination of France in the quarter-final against the United States, President Gachassin had suggested the idea of a new era, appeared to want to end the "republic of players," choosing their own captain. "All this will change, he said. Players will not decide alone. We know that there are friendly relations which can distort the game "

Can we say that the system has really changed? No. It keeps its advantages - players can challenge the capacity of coach unless they deny themselves - and shortcomings - liable, the captain of the players is dependent for its renewal, in this case the contract short Clement about two seasons - but it remains in the state.

Ultimately, the federal office on behalf of a clear continuity, has just confirmed the decision. "The players have expressed a desire, the word is important, said Gilbert Ysern. Arnaud Clement well suited to the federation. "So, so good.

Arnaud Clement, the former friend became leader, did not seem to fear in any case the difference between authority and tenuous complicity born of a particular mode of appointment. "The players are smart, he said. If they thought about me is that they think I can be good. And authority is not something that scares me. If there is a decision to be taken against a player, and for the interest of the team, I'll take it, even if it is no fun. "From this, Michael Llodra was the guarantor yesterday:" Arnaud is right, honest, and when he has something to say, he tells you in the face, even if it generates tensions. I had problems with him one time for bullshit. We do not agree. For six months, it's been hard, but after we got back on the bottom line, and voila. He will make decisionsor say stop! "

WHAT PLAYERS THINK?

It was very rare on the circuit to hear words of bittersweet on Arnaud Clement, rather praised for its exemplary values and self-sacrifice. Not surprising, therefore, that the captain collects the honors for the beginning of his adventure. "Arnaud has always been exemplary, both in his playing or outside, thought Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (8 selections), the team leader. It goes very well represent the colors of the France team, for sure. I think it's his commitment to Davis Cup that weighed in the balance. He was always into it. This is a very integrated. "" Given his profile and his contribution as a player, added Julien Benneteau (5 selections), it is deserved and exciting. It will be a model and an engine. Some may think it's a little early because it is almost player yet, but I think instead that it will link more quickly. "Sought after by everybody, he left it up everyone. "This is precisely the fact that he was chosen after reflection that reinforces its position, noted Gilles Simon, in the sense that other players we know exactly why we took him and not another. "He, the great guy. "For it is really a good guy, concluded Richard Gasquet (10 selections). With a big personality. Nobody has anything to complain about. "

AND NOW, WHAT'S GOING ON ?

First, Arnaud Clement must end for good with his playing, and it will go through the doubles tournament at Wimbledon next week, with Michael Llodra, against Ramirez Hidalgo and Ramos. But then? Wimbledon will certainly be the place of the first discussions between Arnaud Clement and "his" players "were a lot of time before the next meeting, but this time, I want to use it to discuss fully with all world, he said. First step: talk to the players, including training of staff as a subject, but not that one. I need a different kind of exchange than before. "Lionel Roux, coach of France's Davis Cup in recent years Forget, will be at Wimbledon with the dual role of consultant for Canal + and coach of the France Olympic team. Will it also in contact with Clement? "I have no info, but it sure Arnaud wonder if I continue, I'll go with your eyes closed! "

Other steps of early cap'tain Arnaud are simple: draw of the Davis Cup in 2013 on September 19. First round of 1 to 3 February 2013. Clement has seven months to put everything in place.
The bonus in l'equipe today was about Arno and it's the article made ater his win vs Roddick in 2003.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Thanks a lot soulage for these articles, that's so good to read all these things about Arnaud.
L'Equipe is definitly in love with him, seriously !
I hope they'll be indulgent with him when France will lose.

I like a lot what mika (of course) and Tsonga said, that's nice and sincere.
I'm proud of our tennismen, they love playing davis cup, they care of "values", it's so important to me.
It doesn't mean everything will be all right next year, but at least it starts well. The state of mind is "sane".
I'd like french guys of football have the same values, the same passion :rolleyes:

Another fan of Arnaud !

Bonne chance, Cap'...

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

He speaks often of Arno in tennis play and they should say again a word in the next show and Loth will be happy

Jo explains http://www.lefigaro.fr/tennis/2012/...onga8201-en-france-je-passe-pour-arrogant.php that Arno has been choosen because he's much close from the players, because of his behaviour in davis cup and for him it's a guy who is not afraid to make choices and for him it will more rigorous that with Forget that Arno will be more hard with them.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Pfff…

– (Ferme.) Non. À cause du processus de désignation. On m’a choisi.

VINCENT COGNET

The journalist asked him if he met all the players before the decision and he answered no. For him it's not a problem as he didn't make campaign with a program. Now he will meet all of them including the ones he hasn't talked before. It seems he doesn't want to change a lot of things in the staff. I'm afraid he could keep Roux  You feel he's not sure about what he will do  The team needs a bit of changement he has do it and for the players it looks like they didn't want the guys who came with a project and prefered Arno and his personnality even if he had no project.

In Le Parisien Seb says he's not happy cos the federation doesn't call him to announce the decision . He says it has been decided the sunday of the men's final in RG ;)

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

well capitaine, you have a few months to come up with a plan now! :D
Yes

So Arno was again the phone guest in Radio Tennis Play http://www.tennisplay.fr/news/radio . Too long to sum up all they said but and in a way most interesting was the continue to talk after he quit ;). Arno is very politically correct but I feel it's because he's sure about anything about the future of the team

Arno wants to be a natural captain. Same as a captain that he's in life. The journalist are asking about his proximity with the players and he anwsered it's not a problem for him.
About the non gap between his career and the captaincy he says he will have holidays during summer and for him it's a good timing to be captain now because he's still close from the tour and the players.
About his attitude towards players on the chair or inside the team he says he will have to think about it cos it will be different for each players. He wants to discuss with players before, on what they want excatly.
About the staff, on the phone he says he's thinking about each spot so he doesn't answered about Roux.
About discipline he answered it's important for him but as you know he needs to discuss with players before
About his english he says that if it's his biggest weakness he will be happy. Then he quits the discussion and the journalists continue without him.

Lefevre from l'equipe thinks it will be different that it was with Noah and Forget that Arno will add his energy and his meticulousness to the team. Maylin (who was for a combo Pioline captain-Clement coach) is wondering about the sense of psychology of Arno.
For Maylin Noah and Forget had to work on their psychology during their career to have better results and not Arno that would have been only on the fighting spirit. Maylin thinks Arno has not these psychology weapons and it could be the problem.
The guy from RFI is wondering about his proximity with players as he was on tour with them and for the guys around the table he has not the same prize list that Noah and Forget so less legitimity and charisma (that's the idea not the words they uses). They are wondering if it' s not too early for him. Lefevre have also some questions about management of a team by Arno and that his rigour and for him he will have to be more soft.

About Roux the guy from l'equipe says Arno will surely keep him as he's loved by the players who didn't want him as a captain cos he was great a a coach great as a link between captain and players. Thoreau thinks they can be a good combo. Lefevre regrets like me that the choice has been made only by 6 players and not by the youngest.

So the questions are about his management capacity, his lack of stand back. End of the part on Arno

I always found Roux as a bad coach yes he is loved by players but he's not a great tennis analyst of the game, we lost in Belgrade also because of his bad management  and for me Arno should take someone elso but I don't who  I think he will keep Roux and that will be his first bad decision :p

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

I've read the article and it's quite interesting. Arno is really in his new function. Of course a lot of blurry parts cos it's only words not actions. I'm doing a summary it will come later ;)

I add the Pioline article, well he sounds not happy and he's doing as if he knows secret things players would have tell him

Arno and Amelie watching but amelie is not yet Fed Cup captain. I'm wondering when this will be decided

My summary of the tennis magazine interview :

Interview done during Wimbledon.

He's moving progressively in his new function. He speaks with few players in London and he hasn't change his way to talk to them. It's just the subjects which are differents.

Now when he watches matches he's thinking about details, he speaks with coaches, players and already thinks about the speech he will have with them on courts. He's trying to be ready psychologically to this function.

The things he's worrying the most is that if he fails it's all team who fails. He will have to be good in the management of the players, of the staff, in the team spirit. Build a team it's an addition of details and it's on this point he has not to do mistakes. He wants that the group shines that everybody feel happy because it's in those conditions they'll be good on courts.

It's in the gestion of the differents personnality that we see the quality of the captain. He will have to adapt his speech towards each player. For him to know very well players it's an advantage it gives him many informations. For the moment it's easy we are only in theory but in his mind he's not here to pleased to the players. he's here to win the Davis Cup.

In first round he will not especially do choices to win that tie he will do it to win the cup at the end. If there are importants decisions to take he will do it fastly. He hopes that with dialogue players will understand his points of view.

Little talk about the player he was. Anxious ? He denies this but he was meticulous which explains his problems with ball kids.

He says that when he was a player he was very honnest with the press that's why they always had good relationship. Now he will have to protect players not tell everything. He says mysterious about the changement which could happen in the staff.

Guy has announced it will be his last season when Arno started to think it would be also his last one. The strory starts like that. He started to think about the captaincy early even if when he learn it was him he had a stress he didn't prepare. He says that thinking about captaincy has maybe help to ease the decision to stop to play.

When he stopped he was not too emotional, he was happy which is an emotion. Stop the tour doesn't mean he will stop playing tennis. He thinks he has taken all the pleasure it was possible on tour and that if he doesn't the desire to continue there had no reasons to continue.

When he played his last match against De Schepper he lacked of agressivity because in his head he was already captain.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Merci !!!!!!!!!!
It's one of the best itws I ever read. Why ? Because the questions are exactly the ones I've always dreamt to ask to Arnaud !!! Thanks to both journalists for their good work, and arnaud's anwers are very interesting and honest, as usually.

I love how the journalists put the finger on all the difficulties Arnaud will have in his job, in every question, about the doubts everybody can have, they don't handle him carefully with their questions, they insist if necessary, it's a bit like if they wanted to prepare arnaud psychologically, haha
Of course, THE QUESTION, the question everybody here has always wanted to ask him has been asked, after all these long years : "THE BALL KIDS", merci, merci for doing it !!
But his answer disapointed me, it's the only thing he's not totally realist with. In short, he said he's a bit worried but his behaviour was only due to his demanding nature, cause of his glasses...stupid excuses, arnaud !! He doesn't have the impression to have been rude with them, that's a pity...

Well, kezzi, via, the others, you absolutly have to read this itw. If google can't help you, I'm ok to try (I'm on holiday lol)

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

About ball kids they asked him if it was because anxiety and he says no. He's not anwering about the fact he was rude and using nasty words. He only answers about his rituals with the towel. He avoids the question :p

About translation good luck :)

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Did you guys never ask him about the ball kids when you've met him? I did a few years ago. But if he avoids the question I'll keep the answer to myself, though it wasn't very shocking at all.
And I have read somewhere that he always apologizes to them after the match, I don't remember where. Maybe he just doesn't want to remember this side of him and decided to ignore it?

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

you see, i'll never understand arnaud the way his french fans do, because i don't understand french.

as for his on-court behaviour, he's not just rude to ball kids... and there's no point in asking him because he doesn't see it the same way. i'm not surprised he avoids an honest answer if anyone asks.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

I have the same problem Via, sometimes I feel like I "know" a different Arnaud than the Frenchies do.
But I am learning French and will use this interview as practice material. It would be nice if you also want to translate Marine, cause then I can compare what I understand to what you wrote. :)

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

I'm working on the translation, I don't forget. But it's long, Arnaud is too much talkative, he should learn to make short !!
It's a good exercice but there's nothing more difficult than translate french into english. The expressions arghhh :help:

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Well, ughhhh... how to say.... I'm off to holiday without finishing the translation. I started, then I've been very busy, then now I'm gone.
BUT I promise I'll finish it when I'll be back home. I'm so ashamed !
Sorry girls, I was so enthousiast, but english just kills me ! LOL
In 3 weeks you'll have everything in english (ok, in frenglish to be more realist)

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

French guys finished Arno/Mika's job in Bejing, this 18-16 was nice revenge for 17-19.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

Not sure he saw the match  I don't know about the timing but he was playing for his swiss club today. Maybe it was at the same time.

For his Captain Job it doesn't give him a lot of informations. No french players in semi, Jo the only one in quarter. For double the French are able to beat average teams but not the big team.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

He didn't have to see the match to give this comment. To me it's just a nice thing to say that he's happy for them, because he knew how much they wanted it. :)

And I think you can't compare Olympics to Davis Cup. It's a whole different event. In Davis Cup the conditions are different, the atmosphere is different. I wouldn't say the French can't beat the big teams, Llodra's record with several partners (including French ones) isn't too bad against the Bryans. And the Bryans are probably the only team which also plays in DC together, most others have partners from another country.

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

http://www.daviscup.com/en/news/articles/clement-our-aim-is-to-win-davis-cup-again.aspx

Arnaud Clement speaks to DavisCup.com at the start of his reign as the French captain. The 34-year-old took over from Guy Forget in June and his first tie in charge will be at the start of the new Davis Cup by BNP Paribas season in 2013.

On replacing Guy Forget as France’s Davis Cup captain...
Guy Forget was head of the French team for a very long time. He was a very good captain. I have a huge amount of respect and affection for him. So the next captain will be me. I haven’t tried to be Guy Forget. I have tried to project my personality and who I am into this role. I don’t compare myself with the great captain that Guy was.

On picking up advice from Guy Forget...
Yes, I have spoken to Guy in a very general way. I may well want to speak to him again sometime in the future as things develop. In any case, he always gave me very good advice when I was one of his players and he will always be able to offer valuable advice to the world of French tennis.

On France’s current crop of talent in the men’s game...
It’s true that we have a huge amount of good players. With Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, we are now in the Top 10. We also have three players in the Top 20, some very good doubles players and players capable of performing at a very high level on all surfaces. Our aim today, which we don’t try to hide, is to win the Davis Cup again. To do all we can to make it happen. It’s our main and only objective, being the team that we are today.

On stepping up to the captain’s role after being a player...
I think that it is winning that is important. It’s true that the role is going to completely change. For me it’s very important to like these players, to like this competition, the Davis Cup. It’s important to give everything that you can, all your energy, in order to achieve this goal. After that, there are different methods. Davis Cup involves managing a team, which is complicated. Things are constantly changing and depend on the players’ personalities. To be a good captain, I think it’s important to be able to adapt to the different situations that you face.

On his plans for the future...
My plans include already talking a lot with all the players on many subjects. To start in a more general way before anything more detailed. I am very lucky to have a lot of time ahead of me to prepare for the next match and that is something that gives me a lot of comfort.

On his Davis Cup playing career...
I had some really good moments in my Davis Cup career, particularly the semifinals against the USA in 2002.Playing on Centre Court at Roland Garros was also a great moment. Even if I didn’t play in the 2001 Final for which I was reserve, winning was an incredible and unforgettable moment. It was an experience that was shared between all of us.

On the differences between Davis Cup and tour events...
It’s true that it’s completely different. When we play for our career at tournaments, we are the only one involved. We are alone on the court. When we win or lose, it is only us that has won or lost. Here, we are in a team-based system, requiring three points to win a match. We play for our colleagues, our co-team members and also for our country. So it’s not at all the same thing. There is a lot more pressure. A lot more emotion is involved in winning just as there is in losing.

On the possibility of replicating American captain Jim Courier’s courtside dress code - i.e. wearing a suit...
No, there will be no suits for me! I wear one so rarely in life that I will definitely not be putting one on on the court!

Re: Captain Clément in Charge - Davis Cup 2013

L'equipe writes that as we were expected he has kept Roux as he's with him in NY. Arno is not happy with his weight, he's 2 KG more since he has stopped :p but he's happy to make normal suitcases.

For me as I said it's a bad idea to keep Roux as trainer because the players loives him . He could have keep as nanny  and take a real trainer. I remember that at the beginning Forget was working with 2 trainers Deniau and Tuslasne. Here there is no real trainer and Roux is not a great analyst of tennis imo . It will be the same staff with only Arno instead of Guy. Unless he takes someone else I'm not a big fan of that decision :secret:
