Good win against Del Potro today. Vasek came up with some good shots to break back in the second. Overall, a pretty bad performance from Juan Martin, who only hit one winner in the first set and hit two double faults in the second set tie-break.
In Rotterdam I got his autograph too, on one of my tickets. Then, when I entered center court, they had to check my ticket. So this security guy said: "Why do you have stripes on your ticket? Don't say that's an autograph!"
Great win today against Melo and Soares. Sock and Vasek have established themselves as one of the best teams in the world, without even focussing on doubles.
I think you can make a case for Pospisil as one of the best doubles players in the world right now. He and Sock are 4th in the year-to-date rankings having only played two tournaments, behind Bolelli-Fognini, the Bryans and Rojer-Tecau. Rojer-Tecau have played 7 tournaments. Bolelli-Fognini won the Australian Open and lost to Sock-Pospisil the two times they played them.
In the individual doubles rankings, Pospisil is 5th, behind the Bryans, Melo and Zimonjic. And Zimonjic has done very little the year.
He is one of the world's best doubles players, and will anchor Davis Cup dubs for a long time. But that doesn't mean he's not a legit, top 100 or even top 50 singles player
With his win in IW and the finals loss in Miami Pospisil has become the #1 doubles player in Canada. He's also 5th in the world. And after only two events they (Pospisil/Sock) are 4th in the race for London.
Why isn't he playing Monte Carlo? He can't skip tournaments that big if he's serious about being a good singles player. His ranking is close to the cut off for the main draw.
I don't think his ranking is high enough for direct entry to MD and he's not interested in qualifying. Plus he did lots of promo in Canada and hardly practice on clay so really no point to play a master clay event.
My guess is Vasek wanted to get some good clay prep in before the start of the season & thus skipped MC (given his HC season extended right to last weekend in Miami -- and there was no break between HC & clay this year with change in DC schedule). He's got a pretty full schedule on clay after this week:
ie: Barcelona, Munich (1st alt), Madrid Q, probably Rome Q, Geneva (probably seeded), RG (ie. probably no breaks in schedule right through rest of the clay season).
Would be nice to see him improve somewhat on clay ... next DC round is clay right after grass season.
As for Pospisil, he dealt with some knee tendonitis through the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments in the U.S. Needing time to heal up, his clay-court preparation was pushed back and clearly he felt he wouldn't be ready in time for Barcelona.
Pospisil will head to Europe early next week to rejoin coach Frédéric Fontang, with the plan to play the following week's tournament in Munich, Germany.
Hel will need a withdrawal from the main entry list to get straight in; at the moment, he is the first on the alternate list.
Who says Vasek can't play on clay? Good result today, pushing a top fifty player with good clay court credentials to a third set tie break. I think he has a chance to win a singles match against Belgium in July.
I also think there are possibilities. I was at Belgiums last tie, where they had trouble beating Switzerland. Knowing that Vasek is a lot better than the Swiss players active in the last tie... sure, he definitely should be able to do well.
Anyone of you going there? I was thinking of getting tickets, but I am not sure if I can make it.
Do you expect Canada to bring a big crowd?
There were quite a few Canadians in Serbia in 2013 for the semifinal. They seemed to all be seated in the same section, but I don't know how that gets organized.
Usually the "away" team gets a number of tickets, so they sit together.
But, it is also possible to buy tickets via Belgian sale, but then you sit among the opponents team.
Was happy to see him play in 's Hertogenbosch again last week. Unfortunately a too early loss, but got to watch both of his matches.
Got the chance to get a photo with him too, after his practice the Sunday before the tournament started. He's friendly, everytime I see him, I like him more.
He beats local Ward 8-6 in the fifth to reach to fourth round. It was a pretty bad third set, but the last two sets were terrific. Only 9 points lost in his last 12 service games. Great tennis when it mattered.
Troicki was so steady at the start of the match that just a few errors cost Pospisil the first two sets. As I write this, he's on a roll on serve, like at the end of the Ward match. Two sets all, one game all...
Update: epic win! He didn't face a break point in the last four sets.
