Dancevic is off with a sore back sadly (and probably if he wasn't, he would have preferred to play Newport). The other Lapentti (Giovanni) has been announced as injured, but he is in the draw for the Pozablanco challenger - perhaps it is one of those injuries that prevent you from playing 5 sets, but not 3 sets.
so both canada and ecuador are playing without their top two singles players. i wonder who's expected to win now, i havent heard any of the other names in singles except for polansky
Canada may not have the top two players, but they still have the top three ranked guys in the tie. A loss here, even from a weakened side, would be a really poor showing, we won't get a softer draw for WG PO anytime soon.
i emailed sportsnet a week ago and they said they will not be showing either ties (canada/ecuador or usa/spain). they said they tried getting coverage for canada ecuador but couldnt. but it still is showing up on the tv guide so im confused. hope they end up showing something at least
As expected in terms of the lineup. Interesting to see the Ecuadorians basically giving up the doubles match with two teenagers ranked outside the top 800.
Both guys should beat Endara, but I could see a 1-1 split on the first day with Campozano beating Bester.
Definitely agree with you on Peter, would expect to see him if Phil struggles. I will be incredibly unhappy if we don't win this tie. Endara hasn't beaten a top 1000 player since February, there's no way anyone we have should lose to him. That being said, it's certainly possible; Campozano could definitely win both his matches, leaving a decisive fifth rubber, where crowd and nerves would play major factors.
Let's not forget that this tie is being played on clay. I don't know much about popsils and beater but I bet neither of them have ever played on clay before so that is an advantage for Ecuador. Do you guys agree with excluding Polansky from the lineup?
I think the surface will be more of a problem for Vasek then Bester, Phil was a finalist at junior RG, and a lot of his futures wins have come on clay. Vasek, on the other hand, doesn't have much clay experience. That being said, I think Endara's form is poor enough that surface shouldn't really matter.
I think they are making the right decision with Peter, though if Bester does poorly, ML will have a tough decision for rubber 5. Peter has hardly done anything this year, and given that Tennis Canada tweeted he has a slight injury, it seems a no-brainer to start with.
