$40,000 for Charity!
by: Staff
AR.com

10/11/2004 --

Andy is hot on the court and Andy is hot off the court, but Andy is smoking for charity. As previously reported on ar.com, Andy is attending the 12th Annual World Team Tennis All-Star Smash Hits at the Bren Center at the University of California, Irvine Campus. During the auction at the banquet on Sunday evening, $20,000 was bid for a one-half hour lesson with Andy, who then immediately offered another one-half hour lesson raising a very impressive $40,000 for charity.

Andy’s table at the banquet included Elton John, Anna Kournikova, Josh Grobin, and Neve Campbell who all had a great time. Elton showed his appreciation to Andy by dedicating his song “Rocket Man” to him. :)haha: :haha: :haha: DEATH!!!!!!!!!)

Yeah, Carole found some little thumbnails yesterday, the hat he wore was truly atrocious.

What I don't understand is.. how the hell many times did he change in one night? He arrived in a white shirt and played some poker in it (there are pics), he put on a green shirt and ugly hat at one point, and in that video he is wearing a jacket???? Are we sure that video is from Friday night, his hair doesn't even look the same?

Mardy Fish helps reel in charity donations

By LISA RIDDLE

December 10, 2006
VERO BEACH — Mardy Fish could easily have been content with repeating the $30,000 his tennis event raised for local charities last season.

He believed he could do even better this year, however, and set his goals much higher. Tying his tennis event to a concert by country music singer Jake Owen and attracting America's top tennis player, James Blake, seriously upped his fundraising ability. By Saturday evening, following the day's tennis exhibition matches and prior to tonight's concert, Mardy's Tennis & Jake's Music Fest already raised almost $100,000 for the newly formed Mardy Fish Foundation.

"I'm really excited the way things went," Fish said. "I'm thankful."

The tennis and concert sold out. Organizers sold 1,200 tickets for the tennis event at The Boulevard Village and Tennis Club, and 1,012 tickets for the Jake Owen concert conducted tonight at Vero Beach High School's Performing Arts Center. Fish hopes next year to include Andy Roddick in the event. Roddick is a close friend like Blake, who lives on the same street as Fish in Tampa and trains with him.

"We'll get him," Fish said of Roddick.

Fish even mentioned trying next year to attract another pair of his friends, Palm Beach Gardens residents Venus and Serena Williams.

Almost 70 children opened the day by participating in a clinic taught by a dozen Vero Beach tennis professionals. Many children stayed for the tennis, pitting Fish against Blake in an eight-game pro set singles match before the two joined to face Bob and Mike Bryan in an eight-game doubles match.

Vero Beach's Meagan Carrick, 12, participated in the hour-long clinic, but was not in a hitting group with Fish, who worked with some of the children.

"I'm going to see the match, so I don't care if they weren't out here with us," Carrick said prior to the singles exhibition. "I'll get James Blake to sign a tennis ball for me. I like him."

The Bryan twins, who are ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles, and Blake, who is ranked No. 4 in singles, all were jovial on the court. With announcer Brett Haber stirring the players with taunts from the umpire's chair, the match's entertainment value was part tennis and part dialogue with the players.

If you wanted to know how Blake hit that amazing backhand return, he told you about it.

"You just close your eyes, swing hard and pray," said Blake, who lost to Fish in a tiebreaker.

The main beneficiary of the Mardy Fish Foundation is Adopt-A-Family, which provides food, clothes and gifts for needy families in the Vero Beach area.

"It's so awesome. It really goes to a good cause," said Mardy's father and Vero Beach-based tennis pro, Tom Fish. "It's good to help people out who really need it."

MARDY'S TENNIS & JAKE'S MUSIC FEST

Money raised last year: $30,000.

Money raised this year: Almost $100,000.

Total tickets sold to Saturday's tennis exhibition and tonight's concert: 2,212.

Number of children at Saturday's kid's clinic: 70.

Number of pros who taught clinic: 12.

Money paid at auction for two signed Roger Federer rackets (one from French Open final against Rafael Nadal): $10,500 and $10,000.

Success On A Starry Night

After walking down the red carpet and entering the Boca Raton Polo Club, the twinkling lights, the warm atmosphere, and the hundreds of people attended another successful and fun Andy Roddick Foundation Dinner Dance.

Once you checked in, you received a colorful smiley-face wristband as your admittance to the silent auction area and an evening program dawned with the man himself on the cover. After walking through the colorful shaffon-draped entrance, it was time to begin bidding. From a hand crafted, one of a kind doll to Andy’s signed 2006 Davis Cup outfit to a ride on a zamboni at a hockey game, there was something for everyone. After bidding on your favorite items, meeting and taking pictures with Andy, and winning the item you were watching from across the room all night, serendipity was in the air.

Andy came out to meet his fans, take pictures with them, and thank his guests for the support. Everyone then went to find their seats for dinner and the live auction. As you entered the room, your eyes were immediately struck by the citrus colored décor. Lemon yellow, lime green, and Sunkist orange dawned the room, floor to ceiling. Andy took to the microphone to introduce his celebrity friends Boyd Tinsley from the Dave Matthews Band and Venus and Serena Williams to his fans. His confidence on the court didn’t totally carry over into the spot light as Andy joked that he can play at the US Open but I get a bit nervous talking in front of all of you. Then his mother and the Foundation’s Chairwoman, Blanche Roddick, took to the spotlight and gave a powerful and touching opening that touched your heart, making you be happy to take out your wallets.

The live auction began and bidding to win great items such as a Super Bowl weekend package made those paddles and bids fly high. After a tasty meal, exclusive items with their new owners, and wearing out your dancing shoes, the evening came to an end but the festivities were still be to anticipated as tennis with Agassi is still to come.

Thank you to all of Andy’s fans, sponsors, and guests who came and donated for the hundreds of children who the Andy Roddick Foundation supports. This weekend wouldn’t be such a success without you! Now, the fun continues.

shaffon? dawned?

Was the author of this piece drunk? That has to be the worst crap I have ever seen come from that site, and that says a lot considering the consistency of the crap they produce. Wow.

Andy Roddick re-established himself as a force on the men’s professional tennis tour with his success on the hard courts this summer, including a win at the ATP Masters Series event in Cincinnati. His impact locally, meanwhile, remains as strong as ever thanks to the work of his eponymous foundation, which supports a variety of children’s programs in South Florida.

Those organizations once again will benefit from Roddick’s star-studded charity weekend, Dec. 8–10. The sixth annual affair features something new—an opening-night Texas Hold ’Em poker tournament at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood—in addition to a gala and tennis event at the Polo Club in Boca Raton (for more information, visit arfoundation.org).

Roddick, who maintains a residence in Boca as well as one in Austin, Texas, spoke with Boca Raton about the work of his charity and this year’s festivities:

You’ve said that a conversation with Andre Agassi (who will be at Roddick’s event) was the inspiration behind your foundation. Why did it have such an impact on you?

I have shared this story many times, but it still rings true. When I was 17, before I was even a ranked professional, I caught a ride back to Boca Raton on Andre’s jet and was scared to say a word [laughs]. He finally asked me if I had any questions for him. He didn’t know what he [was getting himself into]. After two hours of chatting, one particular answer stuck with me. I asked him what his biggest regret was. I expected him to talk about dropping down in the tennis rankings or something along those lines. He looked at me and said that he did not start his foundation early enough. I didn’t want that same regret. I just hope that I can make as much of a difference as Andre has.

How has the foundation impacted local organizations like Back-to-Basics Angel Foundation and Kids in Distress?

Working with [Back to Basics, which provides basic necessities for children in need], we were able to provide 3,700 uniforms for students. … Without charitable [funding], Kids in Distress could not develop the remarkable program that enables [it] to care for over 6,000 abused and forgotten children. Giving kids school uniforms- or food around the holidays sounds easy, but sometimes the practical things go [the longest] way.

What stands out about the first five years of the event?

I think back to our first year when we were ecstatic about raising $37,000. It is awesome to realize how far we have come. Last year, we raised more than $2.2 million. … The biggest thrill is hearing how what we have done has given a child a better chance at life. That is what this is all about.

A Texas Hold ’Em tournament? Are You a card shark?

I love to play poker, and I play it a lot. Unfortunately, for me, there is a big difference between playing a lot of poker and being a good poker player. ... My tennis friends [Mardy Fish, James Blake] play; it gives us something to do when we’re in foreign [countries].

Andy Roddick & Mandy Moore: 'We're Cool'
By Jon Warech
Teen People
Dec 11, 2006 11:00AM EST

Andy Roddick hosted his first annual Charity Celebrity Poker Tournament at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., Friday night, and his ex, Mandy Moore, was on hand to lend star wattage.

"We're cool," the tennis hunk, 24, told PEOPLE of his relationship with Moore, 22, whom he dated for more than a year before they split in 2004. "We're doing fine now. She's a good girl, and it says a lot about her to come out tonight."

The pair chatted in the gifting suite before celeb guests such as Venus and Serena Williams, Nicky Hilton (who later met up with sister Paris at the South Beach nightclub Ink) and Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough hit the tables. Roddick and Moore have been friendly for a while: In July, they shared an intimate lunch at the poolside Backyard restaurant at L.A.'s W hotel.

Friday's event raised funds for the five-year-old Andy Roddick Foundation, which supports Kids in Distress, A Safe Haven for Newborns and other charities that help abused and at-risk children.

"We proposed the concept and everyone was real excited," Roddick said of the tournament. "We have superstars of the tennis world, the modeling world with the cast of (MTV's) 8th and Ocean, the actress world with Mandy. I'm humbled by everybody that came out tonight. It's pretty cool."

So have he and Moore rekindled their romance? Nope, he said: They're just friends.
