Federer gambled and lost. He know the risks. Now his confidence is in the toilet, losing to 3 absolute mugs in 3 tournaments. The problem is not the racket but confidence. Roger has none
Fathertime has caught Federer as it does all great players. He should retire, he has nothing to prove. His 17 slam record will stand for a long, long time.
He just wont surpass Ivan Lendl or Jimmy Connors for overall tournanents won with 94 and 109 respectively. But it will be sad to see Federer stay too long as he continues to decline. The right thing to do would be to retire after he loses at the USO. Sampras retired at 31. Federer should do the same at 32.
How is it weird? Brand plays the type of tennis that could give Roger trouble on clay. Sure, he should not beat Roger it is what it is. Bad mistake to play these 2 tournaments. But Roger's confidence is in the toilet after Wimbledon. I am not sure he is going to get it back soon.
Federer would probably have withdrawn if this was anywhere else. There were rumours he was going to do exactly that just yesterday.
Partly his own fault though - Federer has always had a stubborn streak outside slams. He'll play his way and let results fall as they will. If this was a slam, he'd have gritted his teeth and changed tactics ..... short slices to the Brands backhand, topspin it left and right, etc etc.
On Brands side, fantastic performance. 77% first serve, huge winners on the bps, took his chances. Playing like that he's a serious danger to anyone, with conditions there so ideal for him.
Congrats to Brand and good luck to Roger in the future. By the way, all those people who moaned about the crowds in Madrid: the lovely Swiss crowd clapped for errors and double faults for Brands and maybe 2 people applauded his winners at points.
Any more wishes you would like to add to your post? Fedfans are in denial...that's the first stage...depression is next
