Great to see an Aussie victory last week when Matthew stopped the run of Jamie Baker. Athletic, fit and extremely personable I hope to see more great tennis from matthew heading into the Summer months

Matt qualifies for the 500 in Tokyo!

Really good performance against Go Soeda today, started off in control, however lost concentration, Soeda won the second and led 3-0 in the third... And then Matt won 6 in a row :worship:

Very good news to qualify for a 500, beating two seeds in Soeda and Basilashvili. Hopefully he gets the spot with the 2 Qualifies playing, extra points of making R16 would be awesome. AO MD looks quite likely at this point...

This current Challenger in Traralgon is Matty's big chance to vault up towards the Top 100 - he's far and away the top ranked player there, and if he can go all the way will be knocking right on the door with 3 or 4 tournaments to go. It's also the last "free" tournament he has...from now on, he'll need to get to at least the second round of each event to make any gains.

Bit of a test in the QF though, with Zhe Li, who has had a good formline during this Aussie season.

Matt keeps his chances of a MD berth in the Oz Open alive, with a solid 61 retired injured win against Croatian Franko Skugor in the 2nd round of Yokohama. Seeded 2, Ebden now matches it with Japanese Yuichi Sugita, the No.6 seed.
Ebden looking good so far.

Strange first round match for Ebden in Toyota Challenger this week... against fellow Aussie Greg Jones, making a rare appearance after multiple injuries have allowed him to play only a handful of matches this year. Matt went a break-up to lead 4-2, then allowed Jones to peg him back to 4-4. First set went to the breaker, and Jones got the early break to lead 2-1, then when Jones held well and broke Matt again to lead 5-1, Matt started limping and tanked the next two points to hand the tie-break to Jones.
After a short MTO during the set break, Matt came back, stretching out his leg and doing slow squats, then just kept the points short, slapping serves and winners - then after saving two break points to get to 3-2 up, he retired injured.

Hopefully it is not serious, but at least it is the last tournament of the year and he has plenty of time now to recover.

Wonder how he would have gone if Jones had not broken back and Matt had won the first set...

And in Delray Beach, Ebden can't deal with a rare bad draw, going down in a quick fire 26 16 to No.5 seed Jeremy Chardy (ATP30). Served at below 50%, may have some sort of niggling injury?

We do realise there is more to this decision than just ranking right?

Matt Barton made $760 by losing in the second round of New Delhi today. Matt Ebden made $4935 by losing in the first round to Jeremy Chardy.

Whilst it is great for us to suggest what events these guys should play, they are mostly doing it (especially at this sort of ranking) to make money. He's got to take it whilst its there to fund the inevitable run in the Challengers that he will have coming up.

That's certainly a compelling reason as to why so many in that 90-120 ranking band enter every ATP event they possibly can - but Ebden attracts such scorn because he takes it to ridiculous extremes!

Most players recognise that dropping down to compete in Challengers is necessary to hold their ranking at that fringe ATP level. Matty never does...he just enters all these ATP events, loses in the first round of almost all of them, and then moans about travelling to all these far flung places to try and climb back up.

I'm sure he'll retire having earned a decent living thanks to that policy; but surely you'd rather be a consistent presence and not a 6 month wonder?
