ANTHONY Mundine scored an impressive sixth round knockout over Rashid 'Snakeboy' Matumla tonight and then promised the much-awaited clash with foe Danny Green would go ahead.

Mundine came into the fight - an eliminator for the WBA Pan African super-middleweight title held by South African Mpush Makembi - as the overwhelming favourite against a veteran seven years his senior and totally dominated from the outset.

The 37-year-old journeyman from Tanzania, who came into the bout with a record of 30 wins (23 knockouts), seven losses and a draw, was courageous in lasting six rounds against Mundine.

But the fight served mainly as a precursor for the eagerly-awaited Mundine-Green showdown.

Green, the second-ranked contender in the WBC division, was forced to cancel his October 23 bout with Scott Pemberton after fracturing two vertebrae in his back and will be unable to train for a month.

Both parties recently vowed to finally make the dream bout a reality with talk of Australia Day as a possible fight date before Green succumbed to injury.

Mundine said immediately after tonight's fight both camps were close to finally clinching a deal.

Mundine was sharp from the opening bell, catching Matumla with his jab at will, and connecting with the first telling blow just a couple of minutes into the first round, an uppercut which further slowed the ageing visitor.

It was much the same for the next five rounds with the Australian's superior hand speed and power proving difficult to handle for the Tanzanian.

Matumla was bleeding profusely from the mouth from the first round and a left hook-uppercut combination in the third further slowed the stocky African.
Matumla landed a couple of glancing blows himself late in the fourth, but at no stage did he trouble the former rugby league five-eighth, who dished out a measured assault.

The brave Matumla continued to take a litany of combinations and lived up to his reputation as a brave warrior, but he was totally outclassed, and mercifully the fight was called off when he was knocked down with a left hook 36 seconds into the sixth round.

The large and vocal crowd, which featured the majority of the Canberra Raiders rugby league team, booed the early finish to proceedings.
