surface speed and serve-return stats

Hi All

Here are the average serve-return stats for the top 50 players (seasons 1991-2013, different surfaces). I dropped 2003 because there appear to be errors in the ATP stats in that year.

Looks like:
- clay is definitely playing faster now (players are doing better on serve and worse on return)
- grass was at its fastest in 2009
- players are doing worse on return on hard now than they used to
(this is somewhat surprising, I thought the overall game slowed down and there are more rallies now)

I would have thought that the all-knowing experts on MTF who always have so much to say about surfaces and homogenization would be all over this thread. Guess not, becasue once the numbers are brought up it's harder to high five a fellow tard and pretend to have any kind of knowledge about surfaces and their characheristics. Pathetic bunch.

Yet more evidence to dispel the myth of surface homogenisation.

Interesting graphs, thank you, although I think your y-axis is off by a factor of 100 ;) :lol:

Players are more athletic and more professional now, so they can defend better. Technology helps them to in this sense. That's the main reason why some people perceive the courts slower now.

The other reason is a desperate attempt to detract from the achievements of some players while they tried to justify the failure of others.

It's weird though that the most vocal experts on surfaces have yet to enter this thread :shrug:. I guess they're busy with discussion who didn't deserve what ten years ago or who will win what in three years from now or who was more talented at the age of 9. Makes sense.

I've heard the phrase ''numbers don't lie'' thrown around here quite recklessly. :aplot:
