Good win Marinko. Duckworth does not go away in a match, and neither did Mato. I thought if Mato stayed close he would be able to break Duckie at tne end of the set, then perhaps go on with it to win and he did.
Tougher match ahead against Brit Dan Evans, although I think Marinko will have too much fire-power for Evans on grass.
Marinko wrapped up the semi, beating Gilles Muller 67(5), 76(2), 63 to advance to the final, where he faced Marcos Baghdatis.
Baghdatis was too good though, MMM going down 46 36.
Good week for Matao, who will move up the rankings this week.
Now onto Queen's...
Good match by Marinko. Had a bit of a wobble whilst a break up in the middle of the second. He sould have broken Cilic again when he had Cilic at 0-40 but failed to make a return, then went 0-30 down, but ended up saving break point well, and then went on with it to close out the match in straight sets.
Mato has a real chance of getting to the 3rd round, up against Lucas Lacko. If he gets past that, he could meet up with Tsonga.
Go Marinko
Very disappointing to hear his recent comments, maybe a little bitter that he's won less GS R1's than the likes of Rogowska, Barty and Jessica Moore.
Pretty much lost me as a fan... in this day and age I can't tolerate blatant sexism. He's entitled to his opinion, but I'm entitled to my opinion too - that he's ignorant.
It's been blown way out of proportion and the media has now done a job on him for a remark that he probably made without much thought. You can't call the guy sexist when he has praised the job that Istomin's mum has done both before and after he made the comment. I think to be honest a lot of the stuff he said is actually correct. The womens game is quite different to the mens and it is a huge risk for a male player to hire female player and vice versa. He didn't say it can't be done but just that he won't be one of the first to take the risk.
As for respecting women's tennis I think he would like to take that comment back if he had his time again but it is simply his opinion and not being sexist. It's funny that a lot of the people that are having a go at Matosevic right now are the same people who are lamenting that the womens game has been overtaken by error prone big hitters. As I said before although the rules are the same, womens and mens tennis are vastly different. I don't have much time for the WTA but that is not because I am sexist. I just simply don't like the way it's played nowadays.
I'm against political correctness, but it was ignorant there's no denying that. We all make mistakes, and we're all learning and growing - apologize and everybody move on. He's a public figure, like it or not.
It was just mentioned on The Project in Australia and they compared him to Tony Abbott and the unanimous consensus was it was sexist.
Who wants to buy into that crap.
It is a different game, the Men's and the Women's. You don't get any men hitting with or warming up against the women, but you do get the opposite. Can't think of what Mauresmo can bring to Andy's game, but she can add to his mental process and approach.
Good win by Marinko. Now I hope the clash with Tsonga is televised. I could squeeze watching that in between the World Cup matches from Brazil.
Go the Socceroos...
Marinko played so well. Broke Tsonga 1st game and went on from there. He returned extremely well and put pressure on the Tsonga served, came to the net at the right time and executed well. He hit his spots on serve and generally had it all over Tsonga.
He did twist his anlke slightly and had it taped up, but then fell twice more on the slick side/back of the court and now has some hip problems.
It was pure magic to watch.
Looking forward to the next encounter, up against big Stan. Go Mato.
I forgot to mention his silky touch at the net, picking up half-volleys off his toes and playing some delicate drop-volleys that had Tsonga reaching and missing.
Not the same performance from Mato as the previous day. Against Tsonga everything Mato hit just hit the inside of the line, against Stan it was just out, or in the net. Peaked against Tsonga, but what a great week he had on the grass at Queens. Magic stuff.
