He's arguably GOAT on both surfaces but on which surface is he better? There are no Grass Masters 1000s and sticking only to slams, it's 7 vs 9 (with the caveat being there are 2 HC slams and only 1 grass slam).
Stats : Wimbledon 7 titles(2 Finals)
AO 4 titles(1 final) USO 5 titles(1 final) = 9 titles(2 Finals)
Not sure overall titles etc are relevant because there are so many more HC titles than grass but he is 56-18 and 14-5 on hards and grass respectively.
If you get tennis, you don't even need to look at the results at Wimbledon, you just know Federer's game suits grass. From the service style, the low backhand slice, the ability to smother players at the net and just the overall way he glides across a tennis court. It all blends together to create a perfect storm that makes absolutely sweet luuuuv to grass.
There are ONLY two bloody tennis tournaments on grass the very best players' play each year, so it would be unintelligent to compare the hardcourt results to the grass court results.
Federer specialises on grass, that's the reason, even at this age, it is the ONLY major title he still has a genuine realistic chance of winning.
No, because the grass masters would have to replace 3 hard court masters, which he does well on. He would have more masters but not enough to surpass Nadal. On the other hand, Nadal could have more masters as well if they replaced some of his weaker hard court masters.
And just to add, I believe Djokovic will lift around 8 Australian Titles by the time he is done and an additional 2 US Opens. So I can't see Federer keeping his mantel as the best hardcourt player to ever exist. Possibly fast hardcourt and/or indoor hardcourt.
Djokovic on slow hardcourt, or even medium, probably just about marginally Trumps Roger. It's tight though and we can't ever really be certain, without Djokovic playing between 04 and 08.
Federer's highest level of play is witnessed on fast hardcourt, not Wimbledon I'd say. But on slow courts like Australian Open he tends to be conservative.
The US Open is bloody well faster than Wimbledon. At Wimbledon the ball skids and speeds up when it makes contact with the grass, but it's not as fast as the US Open. US Open is officially the fastest of the 4 grandslams. Why do you think Del Potro and Cilic both have won there and Federer has won more there than he has at the Aussie? Roddick has won it too.
The World Tour Finals is mud, but the bounce is low, so Nadal can't be effective.
No way Federer is grass GOAT and it's not even arguable, Sampras is and it's not even close. Just look at the opponents Sampras defeated in his Wimby finals: Jim Courier, Goran Ivanišević, Boris Becker, Cédric Pioline, Goran Ivanišević (in QF Sampras also destroyed Mark Philippoussis, a Wimby FINALS opponent for Federer), Andre Agassi, and lastly Patrick Rafter. The level of competition Sampras went through during 90s was far superior than what Federer went through.
Now look at opponents Federer defeated in Wimby finals: Mark Philippoussis, Andy Roddick THREE TIMES, baby Nadal twice, and Andy Murray, arguably the only true worthy finals opponent.
Sampras vs Federer on grass is very close. Arguments could be made for both, I personally feel Sampras just edges it with his serve and volleying. Then again, if Sampras played on the grass post 2002, in this era, I feel there'd have been a lot more success passing him at the net.
Yes pretty much this. I said arguable in my post for that reason. Statistically the case for Federer is stronger(more finals etc) but you can't go wrong with either. Then again dulltards have to hijack every thread and highlight their lack of knowledge.
we are talking of a court which is half grass and half hard now question is whether hard is hard or soft and grass if hard so quick or soft grass which is slower and we have federer playing more agressively on the grass side but hard side even if it is softer can be better defense i think so i will give the edge to hard hard or soft hard federer even over hard grass federer in terms of serve
