Since the World Junior Tennis Qualifying is coming up, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for the 1999-2001 juniors. Maybe it is a little bit too early, but I didn't want to keep piling up on the 1997-1998 thread.

The North/Central American & Caribbean Final Qualifying is in Montreal, Canada this year (May 2-4). The finals is at Prostejov, Czech Republic (August 5-10).

Some early candidates to look at from tennis recruiting:

http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/boys.asp?sessionid=4FD56CA54DC71C86

Note that 8th graders consist of 1998 and 1999 boys (born late 1998 to early 1999). 5th graders are not rated yet (2001/2002), but I want to include Adam Neff in this thread.

Also USTA rankings:

Sam Riffice lost a battle (64 46 67) but showed talent to win wars at pro level. Great fight vs #1 Chung @RifficeSam

Sam Riffice (USA, Class 1999, Currently Junior #88)

Sam reminded me a bit of Andy Roddick; he plays aggressive tennis and he can surely improve his body as he is quite slim with “no” muscles. He has a very fighting attitude and I think that if he will work in gym USA has another good prospect.

The entry lists for the National Clay Court Championships are out. The 18-and-under tournament runs from July 11th through July 18th.

In the 16s:

1999: Kypson, Bryde, Tsygura, Thomas, Goetz, Howells, Makarome

In the 12s (unsure about birth years): Alexander Bernard, Benjamin Kittay, Saud Alhogbani, Phillip Deaton, Samuel Landau, Hugo Hashimoto

Notable absences (many of which are obvious, but what the hell):

Congrats to Andrew but he is not the first 2000 kid to win an ITF. Plenty of players born in 2000 have already won an ITF (Rudolf Molleker, Felix Auger Aliassime, Nicaise Muamba, Nicola Kuhn, Alen Avidzba, Oliel Yshai etc.)

Nor is he the first American, Sangeet Sridhar won the G4 in Sweden few months ago.

The draws for the National Clay Court Championships are out. Some of the kids who weren't on the original entry list are in the draws, including the following:

In the 18s: Vasil Kirkov, Alexander Rotsaert

In the 16s: Adam Neff, Jaycer Lyeons (formerly Calleros), Noah Schachter

In the 14s: Zane Khan

Those additions make this tournament a little more interesting.

Here's a link to the TennisLink page for the 16s and 18s: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=153895#&&s=5SC3

The quarterfinals at the Clays are set:

Sam Riffice (1) vs. Alexander Knight
Nathan Perrone (17) vs. Spencer Richey
Vasil Kirkov (9) vs. Martin Joyce (9)
Oliver Crawford (9) vs. Alexandre Rotsaert (17)

http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=153895#&&s=7Draws4

Richey, who is Alabama bound, has come out of nowhere to defeat JJ Wolf in the round of 64 and John McNally in the round of 16.

Knight, another unseeded player, hasn't even dropped a set and knocked off #5 seed Zeke Clark in the round of 16. Knight, a senior like Richey, will be attending Michigan.

Here are the ages of the remaining players from oldest to youngest:

Joyce: 18 years, 9 months
Knight: 18 years, 7 months
Richey: 18 years, 7 months
Perrone: 16 years, 10 months
Riffice: 16 years, 4 months
Kirkov: 16 years, 4 months
Crawford: 16 years, 3 months
Rotsaert: 15 years, 9 months

Here are the results from the national team qualifying event, which featured 16 players:

https://teamspace.usta.com/sites/co...cument/0710 -- National Junior Boys' Team.pdf

Note Rotsaert's results:

def. Danny Thomas 7-5, 6-3
def. William Howells 6-4, 6-1
def. Austen Huang 6-4, 6-2
def. Kyrylo Tsygura 6-2, 6-1

And now this week he's taken out Oliver Crawford 6-1, 6-0 and Vasil Kirkov 7-6, 6-1. He's only lost one set, and that was in a tiebreak against Connor Hance.

He won a couple of ITFs in the spring (a G3 and a G4) and lost two close matches to Patrick Kypson in a couple of others. He's definitely moving up in the pecking order.

He'll be playing the 16s at Kalamazoo, where he figures to be a co-favorite with Kypson. Riffice, Kirkov, Crawford, and Ross are all playing the 18s as I recall. Aside from Kypson, Van Emburgh, Wolf, Bryde, Howells, Tsygura, Thomas, Cernoch, Bellamy, Mayo, and Fenty will be among his toughest competition there.

Riffice further cements his status as the best American born in 1999 with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Rotsaert. To see photographs from the match, click the link below:

Kirkov finished third with a straight set win over Perrone.

Riffice and Kirkov teamed up to win doubles, beating McNally and Crawford in the final.

15-year-old Danny Thomas, a lefty from Ohio, won the 16s with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Aleks Huryn.

Here is how the Sun-Sentinel described Rotsaert and Riffice's games before today's match:

"Rotsaert features an aggressive attack in which he preferably finishes the point at net, while Riffice, 16, is a backboard who rarely makes unforced errors."

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/p...court-boys-finals-advance-20150717-story.html

I think they're selling Riffice a bit short.

Interestingly, it says that Rotsaert's parents are both from Belgium.
